The best & trimmest thing we found for nights when DD was a major heavy wetter was the VBSN with the small internal booster folded in half and placed in the wetzone, plus I used to put extra boosters on the outside of the nappy...usually a small-medium one folded in half. That put around 23 layers of hemp (am I counting right?) in the wetzone. I was never game to try fleece again after one disasterous experience, but with a trusty wool cover, she'd wake up very wet but not sopping.
It was a bubble-butt look but not too bad. She could roll over with it too. Perhaps slant his matress up slightly (head end) so that it gives him a tiny bit of a headstart over gravity, if he needs it.
