... the reference to machine knit here is to fabrics made in a factory environment. It is very thin yarn that is knitted using an interlocking or jacqard technique to create the fabric.
There are "domestic" knitting machines that can use the same hand-knitting wool yarns to make soakers etc and work exactly the same as those knitted by hand either on circular or straight needles.
