I reckon at his age it's the bite of the toxic toddler night wee.
I honestly don't know what you can do about it though. We had issues for ages with Rory with it - and it really only settled down once he was weeing in the toilet before bed - meant that the next wee in the nappy was only there for a couple of hours before he got up in the morning.
Only other thing you could maybe try is a silk liner next to his skin. Might neutralise some of the acid
