Along the lines of other posters...maybe use a big liner, even a flushable one, and coat his bum and wherever it is red with a barrier cream. If it is the wee then powder won't help, you need something like Zinc and Castor Oil cream, on nice and thick. Sounds gross but it really works to stop the wee getting to the skin.
Only downside is that barrier cream wreck cloth nappies if you are not careful. You may have to hot strip wash all of your night nappies. If you have a few you could save them and do a few together?
