Unhappy Help needed with persistent rash/redness

    Hi,

I'm trying to get to the bottom (pardon the pun) of my DD's persistent red rashy bum

I use mainly BumGenius pockets, Wild Childs overnight and some Haute Pockets every now and then. No matter how often I change the nappy, she always seems to have some level of redness, from mild, to really red raw

I wash with 60 degree water, pre wash and long rinse (frontloader) using Aware Sensitive powder (2 teaspoons for 2-3 days worth of nappies) and dry in the sun 90% of the time.

This afternoon I felt I had to put her in 'sposies so I could lather her bum with cream the rash was so nasty!

She seems to have really really dried out skin? Taut and dry, almost as if the liners are making her skin dehydrate? Also, the areas on the thigh where the legs sit (with the little gathers) are very dry and kind of 'thick'.

    HELP!!

I can't bear the thought of having to give up my MCN!! What can I try?

I think if I could use a bum cream on a regular basis to keep the skin moisturised that would probably be enough. But all the creams I know would wreck the linings I've used eenees' liners when using creams in the past, but they're not 100% effective (I think I've buggerd up a Haute pocket with Desitin just this week ) Does anyone know of a cream that I could use routinely which won't stain or stick to the nappy? I'm using Amolin atm, have Desitin for really bad red raw bum etc...

Open to any and all ideas and advice!

my DD rashed from aware and planet arc.she is fine with omo sensitive (all kids are different though!) have you tried stripwashing or another sensitive powder? since they are all fleece inner and fleece gets buildup easily...

natural balms that sink into the skin(rather than thick white cream that coats it) seem to be ok - like aromababy balm or something bepanthen is a bit sticky, not sure about that...

Try Nature's Child Bottom Balm, I find it really helps- esp. when used regularly and there is no need to worry about a liner :-)

Sounds just like my DD, she gets the same from suedecloth lined nappies and also on her thighs if the pul touches her skin. Maybe try not using the bumgenius for awhile and see if that helps the problem?

    Thanks for those suggestions!

Re the washing powder - isn't OMO a no-no with the bG's because if the enzymes etc ?? I did use it before but changed for fear of wrecking the naps.

Lindy, I going to order some of that balm today! Thanks!

Aother qn - can I use a polar fleece liner in a bG? Or does it stuff up the absorbtion??

    TIA!

i use omo no probs, i dont have BG but have a varied stash.
if he didnt rash with omo i might conclude its the powder?
liner-you probably could, but it might make leaks if the pee struggles to pass through 2 liners before it reaches the absorbent fabric as that how covers work but they are thicker.
if it is the powder and the fleece/suedecloth that wont help iykwim. i think you need to work it out by elimination. do you have any flats washed with omo still??

I've got a number of suggestions.
Firstly, strip wash as suggested above. I've got a front loader and I was shocked at how much I had to rinse to get rid of suds. I always do an extra rinse or sometimes 2. I use Amolin or Omo sensitive. I'm not sure but I thought Omo sensitive didn't have the enzymes like the normal one? I'm off to have a look...
All those nappies sound like they are lined with synthetics - my DD rashes up if she's in synthetics all the time, so I use nappies lined with natural fibres like cotton and bamboo. I've got some synthetics, but I make sure if I use them I alternate with naturals. If you like pockets, Swaddlebees do a cotton lined pocket, otherwise you could try a fitted with a natural lining (Motherease, BBB) or AIOs with natural linings like Bubblebubs.
Also, you could try using Sorbolene. My DD has eczema and I find if I use Sorbolene on her wipes when I clean her she doesn't rash up as much. I haven't had any problems yet with Sorbolene affecting the nappies as it mixes with water, but I do always give my nappies and wipes a rinse to wash it out before I dry-pail them. Don't use it if she's really raw as it will sting. I often use Desitin overnight with an Eenees liner if she's a bit rashy and that keeps it under control. Sometimes I'll use a 'sposie overnight if I need lots of Desitin - I use one of the more-Eco friendly ones so I don't feel so bad

ETA - just had a look. The Omo package doesn't actually say so it probably does. It might be worth a bash though if others have found improvement when they swapped.

I wrote a big reply to this before then accidentally closed the window.

    Anyways... I feel your pain!

Tara has persistant nappy rash.. constant. Today is a doctors visit for what appears to be a bacterial infection again!

It started with a reaction to the elastic in a disposable, than spread when touched with wee in MCN.

I've found I need to have more detergent used, and washed out really well. I am going to buy dettol so that I can try that in the rinse cycle. Nappy free time as much as is humanly possible.

I've gotta start trying more things with Tara as her rash is caused by an intolerance to food (we think tomatoes and strawberries, but she's reacted to something different this time)... argh... it's a nightmare.

OK! Strip wash will happen tomorrow!!

Then I'm going to try a different powder.

If that fails, I'll try flats for a while (rats!)
If that fails I'll loose the PUL covers (double rats)

and if all that fails I'll be back for more advice LOL! Thanks everyone
