It *could* still be teeth...
in that Zeke would cut 2-4 at the same time and often in a row iykwim,
doesn't have to be one at a time.

Also here for Brooke (who was in squares and didn't have nappy rash) kiwi fruit was the culprit - one a day was the maximum because otherwise the poo seriously burnt out your nostril hairs lol so def not good for her bum.

the other thing is it only takes one time - you know, and even the most diligent person it only takes one time in whatever nappy (happens to kids in disposables too) for that 'burn' to happen and then the skin is weaker/more susceptable iykwim.

If the benefit that the disposables are providing is to keep his bum overly-dry (normally a negative) then I guess look for what can do that for you in cloth.
For us fleece and cornflour worked very well. Zeke's bum got like that with teeth but Brooke and Jake despite teeth and all the rest really never had nappy rash. Brooke and Jake were (mostly) terries and Zeke in MCN.

If what you're saying is that cloth in the day is fine but it's the overnight that's the prob, then I'd say it's not cloth as such (otherwise you'd see the same prob in the day) rather it's the time the skin spends in contact with ______ overnight - could be the nappy fibre, the pee, detergent residue, teeth or combination of any one of those or something else totally.

If you're game (does he poo at night?) you could try the no nappy overnight with the bed/cot prepped - ie fleece jumper, fleece pants, fleece layer on the bed (offcut from Spotlight/wherever), then under that the towels for absorbency etc - so he can be nappy-free at night too?

Another way to maybe see whether it's a fibre/material is to cut a fleece liner in half, lay it on one side of the nappy only, and have him in that overnight - and even if it moves you'll still tell where it was touching the skin or not... you could try the same idea in a single nappy (ie not half fleece liner) with a barrier cream on one side his bum, and cornflour on the other
iykwim - because it's hard to 'see' the variables when you try something different each night?

Zeke did go through a brief stage where it didn't matter what was on his bum (and he was mostly nappy free), he got red - so it wouldn't matter cloth/fleece/not fleece/nappy free (never used disposables with him but I fig nappy free was better anyway) it just took the slightest thing - and then bang, no more. So I never really worked out what it was - just nappy free, cornflour and fleece liner...
Brooke and Jake were in mostly terries and never rashed so I think it's partly whatever variable in the kid themselves... yk?

anyway yes it is way frustrating when you don't know what's causing it
hope you find the answer soon

I don't have a solution for you, I just wanted to empathise. Zevulun is also a rashy baby. We worked out that it's a breathability issue primarily. Too much PUL or disposables (more than one in a row) and he's red. Also disposable wipes, no matter how sensitive they claim to be. He can get red from wetness but not as bad as the other issues. He's primarily in fitteds with wool (or coverless), with a fleece or suedecloth liner. Cloth wipes with plain water. It's the only thing we can use to keep the rash away. We have to take 3 1/2 days worth with us to NY in a couple of weeks (religious holidays mean we will have at least one stretch of 3 days in which we can't wash) but it's worth it for his comfort (and that doesn't include Immanuel, he'll have to be in partly sposies because I can't take 50 nappies with me!).

Anyway, good luck in working out what Kai's problem is. It's so hard to see them going through that and feel partly responsible It's really worth persevering. We did have to buy a whole new stash for him but it's worth it.

It does happen during the day as well, not just nights. It just makes it even worse at nights in cloth when his bum is already red. Sitting in wee so so long just melts his skin when its already red.

His bum was red a day or so ago so I used sposies for a few days and yesterday I used cloth, last night I thought "All better" so I used cloth again and it was flared up again this morning. Now, later in the day I can see that the skin has 'melted' off from his balls at the base, very sore looking. Its kinda scabbing now. Must have been that the skin wasn't 100% healed when I put him in cloth last night - oh, and I didn't use cream last night

I am going to try some silk liners and do what you suggested Kristy and have it folded in half or something to see if its helps.

I dont think he is teething anymore cause he has 8 teeth on the top and bottom now so the next ones are his 2yo and he has just cut his eye teeth. Is it that he only cut them a few days ago so he is still 'teething'??

it can take a couple weeks for the "teething effects" to subside . does he have the molars next to the eye teeth? my guys actually got them before the eye teeth so he may not be done yet either.

just a few other thoughts

do you use commercial wipes?
Where I work(kids hospital) I get the parents to not use them and that generally helps. ANd I rarely use them on my boy and get only a little nappy rash

Have you tried using raw silk as a liner that can help

Have you tried alternatives to zinc and castor cream like oil based ones? I use an olive oil and calendula balm and it is great. I like the oily ones as it creates a softer barrier than zinc and castor

have you tried changing him last thing before you go to bed so he is not in that nappy as long.

thats about all I can think of, hope it gets better

oh pobie if he is really bad a good lathering of something like daktozin to kill any nasties can work too - kaelin often got quite red and it helped when he was bad ( though you arent supposed to use it when they have sores i think)
