    Unhappy really bad nappy rash

Poor little Lily has a bleeding bum (again)

Tyler went though this when he was a bub too and was diagnosed with toddler diarohea when he was a bit older, but his came and went. He still now does not have solid poo, but he doesnt go as often as he used to.

anyway, lily is both BF and FF (so i can work), she is on solids, rice, bananna, wheat free (might be gluten free if i read the packaging) some yought recently (prob started prior though) and veggies and meat. My diet has not changed for months!

Anyway, she is now pooing 6-8 times a day. And although this is normal for a BF baby, this is not her norm. She was only going about 1 per day till she started solids seriously. (if i dont give her solids, i cant keep up with her. She really enjoys them) I dont think she eats a lot, but she does have 3 meals.

its not gastro, she is otherwise well, and its been going for well over 1 week. (tyler would do this for 1 day then go away for a while)

doesnt look like thrush either i think.

The other reason this isnt right is coz her bum is red raw. And i dont mean nappy rash, i mean weaping, bleeding and so much so she cant sit up or let me hold her properly. I cant wipe or even hold her without her screaming in pain.

Tonight we are nappy free and she is on her tummy. Will put one on her when she wakes overnight when the angryness has disapeared.

In the past i have had a regiem for my nappy rash. No wipes, cool hairdryer, change often, nappy free time, natural fibres, silk liners, wool covers.

im out of ideas. please help my little girl!!

PS too tired to edit, please excuse.

I am so sorry Carolyn, I feel for you so much. Milly used to have rashes like this. Large weeping welts, bleeding sores and a red lumpy rash all over her bits. She would wake crying int he middle of hte night when she did a wee and was in agony. We unfortunately did precusely what you are doing, when we took her to the doctors they could never find anything and eventually we realised that it was coiinciding with teething. It would also get worse when she went to CC since she went without a nappy at home.

Anyway, all I can say is that it didn't last long (the agony part) and I ended up learning hte early warning signs and could stave it off earlier.

    (excuse my typos)

    Good luck

    Poor Lily.

Is the yogurt a regular thing? I reckon it's the most obvious culprit even if the times don't seem to quite line up - can you cut that out for a while and stick to 'safer' solids?

I hope her poor little bottom is better soon.

aww poor thing. Savlon cream worked well here when Ash's butt was bad. Helped sooth it. I just lined the nappy and used it.
Also I would reccomend not using wipes at all. I know Ashs butt gets red when I use them.
Good luck. Poor little bub I hope it's cleared soon

can i suggest you try calendula omg that stuff is amazing! when megs had absolutely horrid nappy rash its the only thing thats cleared it ! alsi agree go back to "safer" solids and reintrduce again after shes cleared up and do them one by one to see if you can work out if its one of the foods thats the culprit of the rash.
    hope it clears soon!

Carolyn, Sarah has this at the moment too
It's heartbreaking and I feel so useless!
Come to think of it... it could be a yoghurt thing too?

Donna, where do you get the calendula from?

nothing is actually sticking to her bum thats thick. Its like you have a vegi peeler and take off a few layers, or like its burnt.

Its getting better with more nappy off time thankfully.

might be a kick to do some ecing LOL!

We use calendula or chickweed ointment with a VERY liberal coating of Sudocrem or Zinc and Castor Oil cream on top. If you can also do this at the very first sign of redness it can stop it getting worse.

If it is the poo or wee making contact with skin that does it you need a really good barrier cream, hence the zinc & castor oil on top. Buy a BIG pot!

    Hugs to Carolyn and Lily

I hate nappy rash. But what you have with Lily sounds awfully awful!

I would do what the others said about "safe solids" until things calm down. And I would be nappy free for all the time at home as much as you can (I know it's hard when you work). I have read on some other forum that people have tried using dressings such as opsite/tegaderm on the bottom which will keep poos off the really bad bits while being breathable as well, kind of like the dressings they put on wounds or cannulas/drips in hospital. They absolutely SWORE by them when nappy rash was that bad.

And think of all the time you'd save if you get fully into EC! Though I would miss using my nappies lol.

yeah i dont think the ECing is going to happen. Trying to tt my 2.5yo and thats not happening either.

the opsite prob wont work (although the theory is right) im a nurse, and opsite has to stick to some good skin for support. There is no good skin on the inner (crack) crack part. Fpr a spot on the bottom it would be ace. Might look into if i can put it on some of the outer parts, but the worst i cant.

its actually clearing thankfylly. Her poos are slowing today as well as nappy free time.

I think it might be teething you know.

The po was bad this morning but ok this arvo. Nothing would be out of her system yet... its all a bit strange.

I made up a nappy rash cream for Tahlia that worked brilliantly for us (and worked well on the radiation burns from dad's cancer treatments too actually)...

I'd heated a handful of calendula flowers in about a cup of oil, and then used the oil without about a cup of vaseline, and then added some lavender oil when it was cooling.... My theory was the oil would be absorbed, taking the calendula and lavender... but the vaseline acted as a barrier to stop the skin being more burned.

I was just about to suggest vaseline. We saw our GP yesterday about a sore that C has. It starts to heal and then gets yucky again and he suggested trying vaseline because it acts as a barrier from the wee and should allow the skin to bond.

i think this is a good theory. Ally has pretty bad nappy rash at one stage and non of those zinc cream, vaseline or raw silk liner works. So i put this chinese oil use for cuts, burns and bruises on her bum and also put zinc cream (after the oil has been absorbed by the skin). it heals her nappy rash so much faster!

    How's she going Carolyn?
Sarah's has cleared up a bit from lots of nappy free time, a bit of paw paw and no yoghurt.

    Hope Lily is getting better!

yeah she is feeling a lot better. There is still a slight rash but no skin redness etc...

i think it must have been teething, as she is still pooey upteen times a day, but its not burning her skin off. We are still off wheat, but she gets to bikkies that the kids leave lying around. So im hoping to try her on wheat in the next couple of weeks.

Carolyn and Nicky, was there anything you could use to help it heal? Micah did a lot of poos on the weekend when he was staying with MIL for the day and it has TOTALLY burnt all his skin off! It sounds really similar as it's not a rash......just all the skin burnt. No creams will stick to it at all so I can't use barrier creams. We have been having lots of nappy free time and also curash powder. Any other suggestions??

    sorry just saw this not.

the best thing i did was nappy off time

and then also drying the bum with a cool hairdryer after a bath.

lots of boosting on nappies, and lots of nappy changes

and of course i was careful with what i fed lily. nothing new and bland ordinary foods and of course increased BF.

Thanks Carolyn, we have been away all weekend and just saw your reply. The nappy free time has been working.....it's SLOWLY healing :-( Just wait and see and trying to avoid him eating to much acidic fruit.
