    Question Dermatitis and MCN

Hi there! I started using MCN about 6 months ago now, and the past month or two my son has developed spots in the nappy area (mostly on the tummy, less towards the bottom). The Dr says its a Dermatitis caused by the urine .
If I put him back in disposables it seems to clear up.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can keep using MCN but avoid the dermatitis ? Thanks for any help you can give, Leanne

I'm new to MCN, so I'm sure there are far more qualified people available to answer your Q, but that is what is at the back of my mind too - my kids are prone to excema and the doomsayers are telling me cloth will be bad in that regard. However, I just saw some raw-silk liners advertised - think it was on WAHMNAPS - but not sure, sorry. Apparently the natural healing qualities of the fibre soothe irritated skin. Instead of using it as a regular liner, could you put it between the top of the nappy and his tummy, IYKWIM? Just a thought...

    Hi Leanne and welcome

What type of nappies are you currently using?

If not using something with a stay dry inner, you may find that helpful ~ something like suedecloth or microfleece. You can even add some microfleece liners to your current nappies.

RAw silk is also wonderful as liners, I use that on my bub if it looks like he's getting a touch of rash and it clears it up nice and quickly.

The other thing for bubs who are prone to skin troubles is to make sure you change really really often, aim to change after each wee. Fitteds or flats with liners around the home are great for gauging how often that one wee change should occur. If it's warm enough we go with no covers at all.

ETA: giving bub some nappy free kick time everyday will also help

You could use silk liners, I would also recommend heaps and heaps of nakey time to clear it up. Have you tried any calendula based ointments?

Just bare in mind you're doc even said it's caused by the urine so it's not the nappy. Best best best thing to do of course is change as soon as your bubby is wet

Maybe if you're using staydry inners they might be making the problem more aggravated, it's going to be a trial and eror on your part though. Try when it clears use a natural inner nappy (a fitted may be better) and if it doesn't flare up again then you'll know to stay away from synthetics.

Thanks Guys! That is all a help. His rash has nearly cleared up now. I reckon I'll let it go another week and then trail the MCN'c again.

I use a combo of Baby Cheeks which is a AIO and the inner lining is polar fleece and BBH bamboo (which I love for it's absorbency). I was using cheap disp liners, but wondered if they were causing the rash so have bought Imse Vimse liners.

I will definately keep the silk liners in mind when I put him onto cloth again, and change him more often.
    Thank you!!

we have had a lot of probs with nappy rash, and often i found it better for them to be in lmost nothing a lot of the time.

Also changing often- yes like hourly! PITA but it works.

Also if you dont have a prob using disp you might like to do half and half- disp over night or just one on one off.

I found my kids got worse with synthetic fibres and were better with silk.

Also found their rash was from the poo not the wee. And was much better when we used nappy wash rather than disp wipes

    Hi

    This all sounds really good!

I have been using cloth nappies on and off since my son was born but in the last few months I have been having similar problems with dermatitis and eczema.

I have had a lot of trouble with Bumgenius 3.0 nappies which have a microfibre liner.
I seem to only be able to get in control of the rash when using a disposable nappy with a combination of either bepanthen or zinc cream for overnight. Neither of which I am meant to use with the bum genius. I tried stripping the nappies and using different ointments and lotions especially for sensitive skin but I can't get the bumgenius to work for me anymore.

I'm going to follow the advice and try a nature fibre and see if we have anymore success as I would really like to use cloth nappies
