Have the requisite number of pre-washes been done (to work up absorbency)?
the itti bitti website will have care instructions i'm guessing care instructions for the hautes might be on the darlingsdownunder site maybe if she's tired and feeling overwhelmed, she might have overlooked the pre-washes? that would be easy to do when you're exhausted. how does the fit of them on the bub look to you? is this for a newborn? does it have skinny chicken legs? nothing but prefolds/fitteds and covers worked for us in the newborn stage (i'm talking wee and pootainment value).

Sizing & Care : the itti bitti nappy co - Ultra Trim and Super Cute Reusable Modern Cloth Nappies: Bitti D'Lish Minkee Snap In AIO, Bitti Boo fitted Nappy, Nappy Accessories, BabyLegs, ERGO Baby Carriers
care instructions on the itti bitti website under SIZING AND CARE on the right hand side, on HOME page Care instructions for the Haute Pocket Product Care but i didn't see anything about nubmer of pre-washes, so maybe email the site about that. ** Great point baby dreams, about considering what was put OVER the nappy.

As she has gone from using sposies maybe question her about the length of time they were on bub.
My SIL wanted to use cloth so I got her some magicalls to try and the first time she put them on her DD she had them on her for 4 hours including a sleep and was most miffed that they leaked all through the bed! She hasn't used them since as she has it in her head that they create more work so I'll probably end up buying them off her... On the note of prewashing I am very slack at that and use nappies on my DS after only one wash. I also try new nappies on him as soon as they arrive cos I can't help myself when the fluff arrives, and he quite often goes in them without them being in their raw state and I've never had repelling issues. I'd never leave them on him for a great deal of time though or let him sleep in them for that matter. So maybe it's not prewashing but other factors at play here.

Thanks for all your brainstorming guys! I think I've come to the conclusion that it must be a fit issue.
She's washed her nappies so many times that I really can't see how it could be that- like you Sam, I'm pretty slack on the whole prewashing thing and it's not been an issues for me. And the leaks are happening pretty much as soon as the nappy is put on, so it's not a time thing. The only problem is that she lives 2 hours away now so it's impossible for me to see the nappy on. Unfortunately she says she'll go back to using sposies for at least a few weeks then give them another go. I'm thinking I'll send her Z's old small thirsties covers, prefolds and some snappis to see if she'd use those over sposies. Thanks again for all your thoughts.

if wee is running down bub's leg, it is definitely a fit problem. to see if it is repelling (and i couldn't see microfibre ever repelling cos that's the haute pocket inner yeah?), lie it in a puddle of water to see if it soaks up rather than putting water on it
