    Default Smoke smell?

We had a massive salgave/clean up at the house the other day. We had to throw alot of smoke and heat effected stuff , things like matresses and lounge suits. I spoke to the manufactures and they recommend disposing of them as the smell is too difficult to get out.

The nappies that were in the babies room are fine to look at, it is just that they stink of smoke. I have strip washed them and hung them in the sun for a couple of days but the smell is still there.

Does anyone have any ideas for getting rid of the smell? Do you think over time it will fade? Another thing.......Do you think it is wise to use my newborn nappies on the new bub, or is the smoke smell a hazard???? (please say it will be ok )

Been thinking of you Ange! Glad you could salvage some things. What about a dash of eucalyptus oil in the wash? I'd give 'em a few more washes and lots of sun too.

Steam is good for getting smells out, but wouldn't be so good for PUL/elastic, so that doesn't really help...

Ange I'd try a few drops of tea tree in the rinse cycle.

But wouldn't you still have lots of smoke in the air up there anyway? I know we've had smoke filled skies for the past 3 days now and we're about 90mins away. All my washing is smelling of smoke, so I've given up bothering to wash for the moment, lol.

you could also try a canestan rinse or the dettol rinse...neither will harm the nappies......but yeah i think lots of washing and sunning is going to be the best bet ...time is really the only answer to that one...bit like panadol stains...patience is a virtue and all that jazz!! Hugs hun....and I will talk you tomorrow about that other thing...just waiting for Alan to get back from holidays to confirm some stuff......Baby bunting did give me a good price though if you need a cot mattress in a hurry.

I personally wouldnt put smoke smelling nappies on a NB. I am sure there are plently of people that will contribute to your new stash if you need it

On the insurance note, I heard somewhere that the Government is going to insure everybody. Is that right???

As Tracee also said, my things are smelling of smoke when I leave them outside and we are in the Sth East so I couldnt imagine you would have much luck getting the smell out while there are still fires etc
