I have always washed my soakers & longies on delicate warm wash in my machine with wool wash. Then I spray them with lanolin spray inside & out & dry them on the clothes airer.
I tried the bucket method once, but that was too time consuming for me, so in the machine they went & I've never had a problem.

Not hot! I had made 3 organic wool covers (mind you prewashed already) for my sister, who managed to felt and shrink the crap oiut of all 3. She blames it on her washing machiene
I wouldn't go over lukewarm to wash wool, with wool wash of course and if you have a wool cycle set on your machine, otherwise a delicate cycle.
Then once lanolised, lay flat onto a towel to dry.

In that case, add your wool wash to a but of warm & just sort of squeeze the wool - don't rub. Just sort of work the wool wash through the cover with your fingers iykwim? To dry, roll it up in a towel & squeeze the water out.

I found my disana covers always looked a bit felted after I washed them (in the machine on cold, in a delicates bag, with the nappies) but they always returned to normal once I started using them and they stretched a bit. Maybe that's what's happened with yours? I find they don't need too careful treatment.

I do this but lay the longies/hand knitted items on a dry towel and roll the towel up, soaking up all the excess water

I just chuck my interlock woollies in the wash
