For the past couple of months I have been despairing at the crunchiness of all our nappies.. particuarly the hemp ones. They have seriously been as stiff as cardboard on occassions. BUT since Max had gastro last week, I've washed the last few loads with canestan and they have dried incredibly soft! So I want to know, what on earth is in the canestan rinse that is making them soft!? Anyone know?

I think this phenomena was referred to in another thread a while back, but can't remember the details.
As for what I do to soften the hemp here (not any more because they aren't too bad and my DD is no longer as sensitive to them): I used to put them in the dryer for 15min with a damp piece of microfleece if the nappies were dry. That made them soft enough. Of course drying them completely in the dryer would make them really soft!! cheers,

wow - this literally has just happened to us. angus had gastro so i did a couple of washes with dettol (similar to the canestan i think??) and all my nappies were sooo soft. like yourself sam, i have been dispairing over my extremely crunchie naps - so much so i was chucking them in the dryer for a little while to take the edge off the crunchiness as i wondered if they were a bit too hard for my bubbas soft bottom. i am sure i have read somewhere that dettol was safe to use on them. i even had to check the label on the container to actually make sure there was no fabric softeners in it??? sorry - have been no help at all, but would be interested to to know if anyone has a clue?

So there's an upside to having a child with gastro? I would never have thought so! Maybe we should bypass the gastro and go straight to the detol.
(disclaimer: this post is written by a new mum who's 4 month old baby has never has any illness yet, so she has no idea how hard it is when your cherub is sick).

I was wondering about the dettol too. I washed mine with it for the first time the other day due to them being a little whiffy and they were really soft.
