I have a Whirlpool.
Mine makes that high pitched noise to when spinning - Im used to it now though - and the kids they sleep through it, lol.
Oh and I can open my machine to add extra items part way through the cycle - just have to wait a minute for the child lock to disengage. I guess a lot of features like that just depend on what model you have

I have a Bosch...
Only thing I've found lately is that my 14mth old has worked out that one min delay on the child latch... and I often have wet washing all over the laundry floor if I leave the laundry door open...

my girlfriend just bought a front loader and 'we' (we're both enviros too mel!) decided she should get the LG.

the really water efficient ones are quite exxy. maytag and asko i think (? not sure), sos he discounted those. and che brought it down to lg and electrolux.
the winning features of the LG were:
* has 2 hoses so you plug into the solar hot water system (if you have one)
* has a true cold wash setting. i have an electrolux which has cold washing setting ... but i later found out it has a minimum of 30 deg so heats up the water. the electrolux also only has 1 hose so heats the water up using electricity. we use greenpower but still .. i believed the salesperosn when he said this machine ahd all the features i was looking for!

Oh Carmen, you made me think of another point, I find being a front loader, Delilah likes to put everything in there as its reachable - and its great fun to look through the glass door at all the things youve collected from around the house, LOL!

I hate the front loader we had a Samsung. I went back to a top loader. Our wash water goes on the garden. I feel no guilt in having a more water hungry machine not when my garden gets the benefit because with water restrictions I think it was the washing machine that saved my garden from being totally dead.
