Default I can sew nappies...nearly

As a complete non-sewing type, I feel the need to say I've made 2 nappies this week! First one was slightly dodgy, but worked, second one is much improved. However, I am struggling with the concept of elastic. Any tips how to put elastic in the waist and legs? I tried to sew it on the back of my inside layer last night, and that doesn't seem to have worked.
Currently I'm using flannelette as my inside layer, with a sewn-in soaker of 4 layers, with 2 layers of polar fleece as outer. Have a little PUL but want to really get the idea before I start using it. My second effort I left open as a pocket nappy as well so I can boost it more if needed.

Welcome.
As others have said, use the sewing tutorials available online. That's how I learnt to sew nappies. I'm still having trouble with the pesky elastic too so sorry I can't help you with that!

Yeah, it's tricky, that elastic. I made another this week which looks beautiful (complete with elastic) but leaks like the proverbial...so I discovered when my leg suddenly felt warm and wet. (And only moments after bragging to my craft group that I had made this gorgeous cloth nappy )
I had flannelette outer, a waterproof layer, then planned a flannelette layer with soaker and elastic, topped with polar fleece against bub's skin, but I sewed that layer wrong and ended up with the flannelette against the skin. I think what happened (apart from the elastic not working ) was when the wee hit the fleece against the waterproof layer (I used an old shower curtain just to practice with) it just came straight out the nearest leg hole. I had planned it the other way around - wee, fleece, soaker, flannelette, waterproof, by which time the wee should have been mostly caught.
Oh well, practice makes perfect...so they tell me. Less elastic, more stretch next time. And back to fleece outers and covers, as sad as it is to hide that lovely fabric under a cover.
