Default 1st time Mum treating having a baby like doing a uni course ; )

    Hi All,

I am 23 weeks pregnant with my first and started my cloth nappy research a couple of years ago at the Sun Fair at UWA (University of WA). Obviously not seriously until it became relevant and still it's abstract because I don't actually have a real little person doing the business in them yet!

Still, I have become a mad ebayer buying variations on the MCN.
I have Baby Roos, Nature's Child, Baby Beehind Magic Alls, Ella's House hemp and Cloth'd up minky covers.
Not to mention a couple of organic wool crocheted soaker/pilcher things.
Also, I'm waiting on 5 mtr of bamboo fleece from Bubba Earth to make about 7 flat nappies.
I have so far made one fitted all-in-one nappy using some iron-on vinyl and cute-as quilting cotton and an old flannel (for soaking section) and flannelette lining. The vinyl feels a bit crispy though.

I held a 'Peruse a Cloth Nappy' evening with the Australian Nappy Network Perth kit at my place with antenatal class folk, friends (who are users) and friends of friends. Cloth nappy systems are overwhelming me with choice (the stuper-market) so I figured it must be the same for everyone, so as I imagined quite a few people turned up.
It was great to hear the users' experiences. It seems no one thing works for all sexes, body shapes, lifestyles and particular convictions.
It did seem there was some concensus about 'what not to buy' - I can't name names here as says the rules of the forum. The opinions were somewhat surprising though.

I can't wait to become a bit of an expert in the use of cloth nappies as I am currently a WAH bridal dressmaker and the problem solving of patternmaking and technical function of clothing turns me on!

It has been suggested (by antenatal class mate) that perhaps I will start a nappy label one day but I say with so many people doing it already I would need to do something pretty special to make a mark in the saturated market. I think I will just come up with some prototypes for my self/ourselves.

    Caio for now,
    Jemma

PS. Looking forward to meeting mum's in my area as I have recently moved to a new suburb - with no cool cafes!

Hi Jemma, yep coolbellup is MILES away!! Well sounds like it is!! I live in Perth and I think it's somewhere SOR????

Most nappies waterproofing is done with PUL. I don't know if vinyl will hold up after washing?(someone who has actually made AIO/pocket nappies will let you know!)

Congrats on your pregnancy, and have fun buying/sewing your new nappies! They become addictive VERY quickly!!

Hi Jemma. Welcome to NC. Make sure you ask the mods for permission to access the WA Nappycino site so you can keep up with any gatherings and events ... and random chatter between the Perthies.

All the best with your pregnancy. Fabulous that you're so excited and planning ahead. I'm 29 weeks preg with my second bub. And pretty disorganised

    Hi Jemma,

Good luck on your quest to the perfect nappy!!! I think nappies are like knickers - no one style suits everyone. Some like bikinis, some like hipsters, some like boylegs, some like granny pants. Doesn't mean any type is better than another (although jury's out on granny pants) but every style has their place in the market.

It unfortunately is a game of trial and error to find what suits the bum you're wrapping!

    Have fun with your shopping!
    Cheers,
    Linda

hun vinyl is not the best to be making nappies with (i know that cheap covers are made out of it - but thats another story) its not as breathable as PUL or even heavier weight fleece,(both of these are used to waterproof nappies) and doesnt wear as well nor is it very soft after repeated washings
PVC also releases pthalates i dont know if you've heard of them but they are endocrine disruptors which means that it affects hormones - i'm not going to do a big spiel about it here - just google it and u'll see what i mean - it is probably best to minimize exposure especially among little bubs

anyway - off my soapbox now if you are interested in making nappies nappiescovered.com.au is an awesome resource as is ozclothnappies.com.au
    welcome to nappycino
