Default Nappies for Newborn?

Hi! Not sure where to post this, so mods you can move it if you want

We are currently TTC#2. At the moment we use pockets that I have made on our 1 year old son. These are all large so they won't be used on a new bub, and they are for a little boy and we are thinking pink!
My question is............
What would be the best nappy assortment to get a bub through from newborn to toilet training? Such as....OSFA pockets, fitted for newborn and then pockets, assorted sizes of pockets? I would like all suggestions so I can glean ideas. Oh yeah, I make my own too. I am a nappy making addict!
Thanks, Leah

i'm yet to use mine but from all the advice i have been given i would say use prefolds for newborn and then OSFA pockets later on for the cheapest option.
Or for a better fitting option (but more costly) a combination of prefolds and small fitteds for newborn and then move onto the pockets.
Apparently small pockets for a newborn are not as reliable becuase you don't get two layers of defence for leaks etc with tricky newborn poo!
hope that helps!

Hi and welcome. Prefolds and flats that can later be used as pocket stuffers are great. You could even get some OSFA pockets to use as covers so they are not 'wasted'. Enjoy your research.

We used a mix of fitteds (Erica's and homemades) and flannelette squares. My terries were too big (premmies - 2.1kg and 2.4kg) - so I cut them in half and used them too.

I started with cloth when DS was 4-5 weeks old, we used infant prefolds for daytime (with GOOD covers) and fitted nappies for nighttimes.

The prefolds are great for pocket stuffers, and for wee clean up when you have nappy free time

My son fit the erica hemp blend fitted nappies (medium) at 6 weeks old and still fits them at almost 21 months old (12.2kg)

cheapest option: prefolds for the newborn stage. then fitteds or pockets or whatever you prefer for 3 mths and older. disadvantage of prefolds is that they're not quite so cute and not so good at containing poo. advantage is that you can use them from day 1 to toilet training (as pocket stuffers). so very economical and versatile.

for this baby, i have bought a stack of small and some newborn sized fitteds. and PUL covers. we have loads of leftover prefolds and squares from amelie!

oh and i would get some baby beehinds - they fit from early on without being too bulky. and fit my 2 yr old too

have fun - making and buying nappies is so fun!! i am forever taking out my stash of newborn nappies to show off

welcome to nc leah
i started using cloth when bubs was 3 months, but i used flanelette flats pad folded and laid ontop of a pocket , then a fleece liner on top of that. then i could keep re-using the pocket as a cover until we got a poo!

some people do this but use pad folded prefolds with a bumi's cover...

It depends on how big your nb is, whether you mind the puffy look on a nb and how much you want to spend.
Most economical option would be to do a OSFA in a fitted or pocket or some of each - what ever you prefer - you might have abit of a bulky nappy look for a few weeks, but if you didnt mind it would be ok.
Next option would be to use flats/prefolds with covers, then use OSFA from 2 or 3 months age (if you used OSFA pockets, you could use the flats/prefolds as stuffers)
If you like the trim look and cost is not an issue, use sized fitteds or pockets.
I used a mix on my nb who started cloth at 3 days old. I could have used just my OSFA pockets or fitteds though cause i dont mind a puffy look (and theyre not that bad anyway - esp my OSFA pocket) and they all fit and worked well from birth.
