Ohh... I was talking about http://www.pbcexpo.com.au/
It will go to Melbourne on the 19th of October. Definitely not the same as the Parenting Australia one.. If you want free tickets to the Sydney one, just print them out of the website. (Worth doing, each ticket is $16 for an adult)

Carlos you're a legend! Go daddy. I'm sure lots of the women here would love you to inspire some of their hubbies about cloth! I'm blessed that my lovely man is happy to use cloth nappies, especially from a financial point of view. Though I must say, if I leave disposables about, he will sneakily use those when it's his turn for a nappy change or if he has DS for the day. Hence, I no longer have them in the house LOL.
Anyway, the expo will be wonderful for you because you can talk to people who are actually devoted clothies rather than a shop assistant who may not know much about the products. Like Ana said there is a store in Willoughby, on that home decorating strip as you head into town, it's called Eco Home or something. They carry Baby Beehinds. Hope you have fun at the expo, and it does make a lot of difference to your understanding being able to feel and examine modern cloth nappies. Much easier than reading about it.

Thanks Beanie! Hard to believe the legend tag.. more likely the "ignorant" one as every day I found more and more stuff I don't know! I have to admit I don't know if cloth nappies are the most wonderful thing under the sun, it is just that I believe that using disposables is pretty much like shifting the problem to someone else (more likely our own children as they end up in unsustainable landfill). I'm assuming cloth means a bit more work, but if I shy away from it, how can I teach my children not to? -I'm starting to get philosophical here, so don't get me started ;-)

Yes I agree about the shifting the problem to someone else. We are definitely creating problems for future generations throwing out tonnes and tonnes of disposables every year.
I think the main issue is that disposables have been seen to be the default and proper product to use for a baby's toilet needs. I really feel that this is a wrong attitude that has developed in our culture - disposables are a fantastic invention, if they are kept in their place as a specialty item, when you really do have a genuine need for the convenience or sterility of a disposable. I use them for example when DS has very bad nappy rash (eg teething), just for a day or so, then back into cloth. I would also use them if I were going on a weekend away and it would seriously inconvenience us to go and find a laundromat etc etc. The analogy has been made many times, that disposable nappies should be seen like disposable plates and cutlery. You use those when you really have to, on a picnic, or at a party or for Christmas dinner in a hospital room as we did once!! But you would think it terribly wasteful and unnecessary (and ugly) to use plastic plates and forks for every meal. I think of disposable nappies in the same way, and I really wish that our culture could start to swing towards that attitude as well.

Beanie- thats a greatway to put it...mind if I borrow it next time I am trying to explain using cloth nappies on Lil...yep around here you have to explain..numerous times, with my relatives and friends.
Cloth is a little more work but you can work it into your normal routine. I do laundry everyday so it gets mixed in with kids clothes and towels etc. I put them together in front of the tv and stuff the change table full of fresh clean nappies that last several days..so its almost like a 30 min - 1hr extra a week..and so rewarding. |
