Default what do you think?...

i have yet to try a wool cover but i really want to, one of the concerns i have is that a knitted pull-up style cover would be yucky if it got pooed on - hard to get off baby without huge mess etc.

i was talking to my mum about this and she remembered that she made nappy covers out of an old blanket - it was a triangle i think, with buttons and she can't remember how well it worked exactly, but can't remember it not working either if you know what i mean? what do you think of the idea? i was thinking of cutting it to shape more and perhaps using two layers of a thinner blanket with elastic for the legs and back...

one of the advantages i can see is that i can wash it in the machine before cutting and then it should be machine washable. i had been thinking of making a felted one in any case to eliminate the worry of shrinking it!

anyway - does this sound ridiculous? should i just try the standard knitted variety? any advice will be appreciated...

No not mad at all Crystelle.

Regularly used idea there... but I agree on felting the blanket first (then if you are lazy like me - you don't really have to lanolise it either... but I should...). After all it is easier to wash in the machine.

As to knits - I have about 5 or 6 I use on Joel (9wks) and yes, they do get that lovely nb breastfed poo on them often and they can be messy to clean... (unless you like handwashing woollies ) but I just love using wool on my boys too much to stop because of that!

Great idea! I am sure your covers will work really well. If you want more help with the details go to the sewing forum, if you do a search you might get something, otherwise post and you will get lots of help.

There are patterns for knitted wrap style wool covers which do up with velcro, check the patterns sticky in the knitting forum (link below). While you would still have to wash them they would be much easier to get off a newborn. I plan on knitting a few for the next one.

i'm glad to hear it works!

thanks for the link to the patterns for wraps but i can't access it! i don't seem to be privileged enough yet... i'll do a bit of a search on the internet for them though.

i've just been out scouring second hand shops - not a blanket to be had except for one hot pink one - i was tempted but thought DH might not like pink on his boy!! i'll see what comes up in the next few weeks...i might just knit one.

the reason that my mum mentioned the blanket thing to me was because i asked her if we could felt some wool into a piece big enough to cut a cover out and she wondered why i wanted to do it the hard way! we might still do that though - it's fun to do anyway.

I am going to buy a couple of BB wool wraps for the new one, the new colours are great too.

My SIL used cut up wool blankets on her kids 20 years ago, just with terry squares. She said they worked really well. Not sure what she held them together with.. I will ask her next time I phone. I don't think she lanolised them either, so pretty easy.

I use the baby beehinds wool wraps on my lad...they're great.
