Okay, I'm in danger of rambling here, so I'll try to be concise.

Wipes: small, 10x10cm, some polar fleece and flannel, some all flannel, some sherpa and flannel, some terry and flannel.
Sherpa grabs well while being soft, I'll use that or towelling for poop.
Flannel, which I make myself, for wee. If I need to dry, I'll dry with a flannel one too.

Water: a spray bottle from the supermarket, wets really well. Added a bit of water soluble eucalyptus. (You could add oil too, shake before use, if bottom tends to get dry?)
DH sometimes sprays Riv's bottom directly. They think it's funny. Riv's less of a fan now it's winter
On super cold days, I'll spray the wipe then breathe hot air on it to take the chill off. Takes 2 seconds.

I started out with them pre-wet and I got sick of changing the water. Spray bottle works best for us.
Going out I'll take dry wipes and run them under a tap.
Small wipes mean I don't mind using a few, and get in all the crevices easily!

Try backing the flannelette onto the polarfleece Mel. (Mine are microfleece but I'm sure its about the same). Makes them thicker and easier to use. I haven't got a problem with them going mouldy though and haven' t heard about teh boiling water thing.

i have some (i think) stretch tery makes great wipes i wet them with a spray bottle that has diluted baby bath in it and then dry her bottom with fleece.

I went to BigW in the end and got one of the 10 packs of facewashers. I have found them way softer than all the other facewashers I have so Im glad I bought them, Theyre easy! Alot of friends recommended those particular ones. Theyre great!

Thanks everyone! I have also got myself a little pump bottle and have water and a little sorbolene cream in it.

And her nappy rash cleared up as soon as I changed wipes.

We use flanlette squares too mainly, with some terry facwashers for the scary sticky stuff. We use the good ol' thermos method with them - got the idea from these forums and love it! We make up a thermos of pure chamomile tea with a few squirts of aloe vera gel in it and two drops of lavender oil then shake it up. If I remember to tighten the lid up after using then it stays warm for two days and stops Seth screaming as much at nappy changes (he hates cold!).

Our thermos is a cheapie from Coles and has a pourer in the lid so you can just dribble out a little bit at a time till the cloth is wet enough for your needs. This solution seems to be great for stopping his skin from getting rashy and is even nice for a whole-body wipe over in between baths. If I've left the lid open and it's gotten cold when there's still lots left I pour out a cup of it, microwave it to heat it up and then pour it back in to save wasteage. If I'm just wiping him after a wee then I can wet just half the cloth and use the other half to dry him - only washing one cloth then!
