Cloth wipes that is!
Ive used flanelette ones I made myself. It was becoming too much work to keep them wet enough and remembering to use boiled water to stop them smelling mouldy. So I tried polar fleece squares. Spraying them as I need them. They feel lovely to use, but she's getting a bit of nappy rash, which I thought was from teething, but Ive just noticed her bum still smells after I clean it, Im pretty thorough. Theyre also leaving behind a bit of fluff and stuff from the wash on her bum I have tried spraying the flanelette ones, but it takes ages to get them wet enough, if theyre not wet enough, they feel too rough for her skin. So now Im just stuck as to what to do! Any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe buying the nature baby wipes (I think - do they disintegrate into the earth? Please excuse my lack of a better word, Ive only started worrying about the environment since I started cloth) Any advice would be much appreciated!

try terry - grabs well
you can just get cheap flannels from the shop or cut up old towel to try, either overlock or zigzag the edge to stop fraying. I find that flannel doesn't 'grab' very well although is good for the final 'finish' wipe (so if you sew them you could do terry one side and flannel the other, or just do single terry ones) and that polar fleece does nearly nothing (jmo - some ppl like it) try a thermos of warm/hot water if you want warm wipes otherwise a container with hot water bottle else use some Gaia moisturiser to wet them and give them a quick 'rub' between your hands to warm them - usually enough to take the 'edge' off... HTH

I have tried terry, and At the time thought it was a bit rough. Maybe the facewashers I was using werent any good. Although if they were wet enough maybe that wouldnt be a problem.
Geez talk about experimenting LOL

I keep a little tub with wet wipes in it. However I generall only put in enough for the day. So that way the water is changes regularly and no mouldy smell (I use tap water)
Are you using anything else but water? Sometimes I put a bit of DD's Gaia wash in it or some sorbolene. Just to make her smell clean YK. I agree with Kristy, terry is great. I just bought cheapo face washers. I also have flannel and ones with velour. maybe make sure the area is dry before you put a nappy on aswell???? HTH

Actually thats a good point about making sure its dry. The polar fleece wipes leave it quite wet, and Im having to get a dry wipe to try and get her dry!

Yep Mel I always found polar fleece left DD too wet also. I found the fleece good for wiping if you are using a lotion not water.

I just wet on the way to the change table. I have a pile of facewashers in the bathroom as well as a pile on the change table. I have cheapo face washers that are terry one one side and just the jersey on the other from Big W.
I also have a pump pack that used to have sorbolene cream in it, now it has just water with a little sorbolen mixed through it too. So that is cold I also used a dry wipe to dry off after nappy change and they are mostly the flannel and sherpa wipes that I dry with. |

I just use cheap terry face washers. I've found the ones at Best and Less to be quite soft and fluffy - and cheap too
![]() I used to use a spray bottle with tap water and a little top to toe wash but found that it could take quite a while to get the wipe wet enough and gave up. I now just wet under the tap as needed. I usually wet a few to take when heading out. |
