anything grabby - so texture rather than what it's made from
although the smoother (flannelettey ones) are nice for drying etc that's in single layer double sided ie terry/sherpa etc one side and flannelette the other side is a good combo, just a little longer drying time (but doesn't bother me I peg 3-4 on one peg by the corner and we have a heap of wipes so not fussed iykwim) I just have a bowl with cammomile tea in it and wet the wipes as needed for out and about I use a bottle of Gaia moisturiser, diluted by half with water (only works with the moisturiser not the soothing one) and squirt that onto the wipe as needed. I have made many many wipes. I still like two ply fannel. I also make beatiful MM AH AB print wipes with natural or dyed backing for my store. We use wipes for EVERYTHING and are about 95% paper free here. (my 17 year old dd will not completley jump on the train). My littlest guy had huge sensitivities to the commercial wipes so they disappeared LONG time ago.
Here is a collection that was given to me from the mama behind Full Moon Baby Gear some time ago. I use it to include in with my bundles of baby wipes when I sell them: Wipe Solution Recipes The ingredients for each of these solutions can be mixed in a bottle, which you can then tip over your wipes in a plastic wipes tub until they are wet through. You can also put the solution in a spray bottle for use when you are out and about. Solution One 1 1/2 cups warm water 2 tablespoon. oil (baby oil or olive oil) 2 tablespoon. baby wash (eg liquid baby soap) Solution Two Two camomile tea bags Two teaspoons of almond oil (or baby oil) A drop of some essential oil. Two mugs of water Solution Three 1 camomile tea bag 1 cup of hot water 1 teaspoon oil (Baby Oil, Almond oil or similar) 1 teaspoon Baby bath or shampoo 1 drop of Lavender Oil Brew the teabag in the hot water & allow to cool slightly. Pour into a screw top jar (jam jar or similar), add the oil, baby bath/shampoo, Lavender oil & shake well to mix. Solution Four Make a cup of honey and camomile tea. Pour a little into a bowl to soak your wipes in. Drink the rest. when all else fails -- good ole soap and water work great.

i use the baby facewashers - i got some from big w and some from toys are us - they are just the thin ones, single sided stretch terry, and overlocked at the edges. i bought at least 50 but i've never run out so you wouldn't need that many. and we just use water - although we're only just starting solids so that may change in a few months!! the camomile tea idea sounds good...
when i bought the facewashers and told dp that they were for nappy wipes he thought that was taking the reusable nappy thing too far, but he's since realised that they work better than the disposable ones. good luck!

When I started out using wipes I just got some cheap facewasher or used some not so good ones from home and put them in an old wipes container and added a little water.
As I built up my nappy stash when I placed an order I would add a few wipes if the mum did them. Fashwashers are easy to do and just chuck them in with the nappies to wash

We cut up homebrand wipes (what you use for cleaning, dishes, etc.) into about palm sized pieces and use a spray bottle filled with cooled boiled water and a bit of sorbelene cream. They're surprisingly soft and last for aaaaaages; not to mention dead cheap. If she's rashy we use cooled chamomile tea in the spray bottle. Have bought some 'nice' wipes from a couple of WAHM's for when we go out and I have a little spray bottle I just fill with water on the way out. I just found we needed way too many wipes each day to be able to afford nice wipes at home (we use terry flats at home so frequently changing).

I use really soft terry on one side and flannelette on the other. I give the terry a couple of squirts of the spray bottle and wipe away. Then I wipe dry with the flannelette.
They don't take up much room in the washing machine and dry really quickly - much better than throwing them out. We're on a farm so we really have to minimise our rubbish as much as possible. I don't have an overlocker so I just used the sewing machine on a really tight zig-zag. Am quite impressed with my efforts as well considering I asked the lady at the sewing shop where I could find bobbins with thread on them!! Whoops!
