Red face Sooooo confused

Im sure you have heard it all before and answered the same questions millions of times.. but here goes:

I have a 9 month old daughter...and a bub on the way in 8 weeks.

Im going to be using sposies for the firs tmonth but then moving to cloth for both kids after that.

Im so confused what to buy, wat brand, wat ones for night/day, wat kind.

So:

1. What brand is the BEST to buy...i have looked into Baby Bee Hinds and thats bout all
2. What kind will do both kids....(AIO, OSFA etc)
3. What kinds need covers, what ones dont

So in summory... i just want to buy one kind of nappy and size so i dont have lotsa of different kinds....

Sorry im so blonde and dumb

I wish there were a straight forward answer to this question - everyone has their favourites - We have a number of the Baby Beehinds, the hemp is quick drying and not bulky and the bamboo is great for nights - very absorbant...

Look into a few different brands though - buy a couple of each!

They are often called OSFM (one size fits most) because all bubbas are different shapes! You can get OSFM in all the different types... if you used fitteds you would need different sized covers though...

Fitted nappies need covers, AIO and pocket nappies don't, but when you buy the nappy it will tell you in the description "This nappy needs a cover" or something similar... Have you had a look at this guide?

Don't say sorry - you've got pregnancy brain! If you do choose to only buy one type of nappy perhaps buy a small number first so you can be sure you'll like them! But don't be afraid to try a few out - a lot of the stores will do a mixed pack for you to try a few different brands out for a low price...
HTH!

Good answer! Most people switching to cloth want just one type of nappy. There are so many different kinds/brands/materials that I think you would be missing out not to have a mixture. Every nappy has it's own strengths and weaknesses and every baby has a different size/shape/bowel movements and every mum has a different change/wash/dry routine.

Check out Modern Cloth Nappies, Oz Cloth Nappies and of course the pages on Nappycino for info that simplifies the different types of nappy.

If you wanted to make it super simple, you could just go and buy a pack (say 35 nappies for 2 kids) of Mummy's Touch OSFM AIO. That would save a lot of hassle. BUT you may find that your new baby does not suit synthetics (my baby can only tolerate for a short period), or your older child's leg shape doesn't suit the way the nappy snaps together. Or you may find you prefer a lay-in trifold booster as opposed to a snap-in.

I've just spent the last 6mths buying and trying (secondhand) nappies to see what I like. Now I'm ready to sell them off and buy up big of the 4 that I've ended up choosing. Each of the 4 have their own strengths and weaknesses and I like them all for different reasons.

Good luck and CONGRATULATIONS!

Cas

Just dropping in here to say HI KIM!!! So glad you came over for a chat

The other ladies have already said vastly more intelligent things than I can at the moment.....good luck. I agree with try a few different brands. As you know I have MANY nappies and they are made up of heaps of brands. I find different ones suit different times and uses. Home, going out, summer, cooler weather etc etc

Bubblebubs (BB) are a great AIO, the booster is attached, so you don't have to worry about finding it in the washing (yep I am lazy LOL). And the fit, and 'on time' is great.

BabyBeehinds Hemp (BBH) are great day nappies if you are on the lookout moreso for OSFM. And the Baby Beehinds Bamboo (BBB) are a fabulous nap/night time nappy. I'm not a fan of PUL covers. I much rather use the wool wraps, they are awesome over a BBB at night.

I can't comment on the others, I haven't used them.

I started out only going more for AIOs (I have a mostly AIO stash still), but once you get the hang of MC you'll find what works best for you and your Bubs. AIO are great through summer when it's hot, and drying is easier done, through winter pockets are a great alternative.... depends where you live as well

Welcome to NC BTW

oh, i thought you were ONLY after AIO recommendations, but now i see you're asking about fitteds as well.

ok, about OSFA FITTEDS, that i can say more about (i was a bit floored when you asked about OSFA AIO's cos i haven't got experience with those)

OSFA FITTEDS
- Cute Tooshies - lovely and soft. I can't use them on my 9 month old now because she has developed Rubinesque thighs ala three lovely big rolls of fat on her hip.thigh region. Before the Rubinesque situation, i really loved the CT's. Now we are "resting" them, in the hope that once crawling kicks in, my bub will slim down again. bamboo delights are the ones we tried, bamboo velour topped booster and trifold inside nappy.

- Whizz Kidz - excellent adjustment - because these are a side snapping affair, whether your bub has chicken legs OR chubba legs, you can adjust the legs most excellently. They fit from 4kg - 15kg. Very nice outers made out of quilter's cotton, so you can wash them a million times and they still come up looking new. Polar fleece inside and snap in booster.

INSERTS
Greenkids - excellent absorbency and shape. Prolly not needing that much straightaway for the nb, but will be great for your toddler. They are good for my 9 month old.

COVERS:
over the Cute Tooshies and the WHizz Kidz

I've been thinking about your desire to get OSFA stuff
there are PUL covers called WONDERWRAPS (brand) and i think they are sold at either nurture nappies or darlingsdownunder.
Same principle as the bumgenius OSFA pockets, there are three rows of snaps on the tummy section. Snap it the smallest for your nb, leave it all unsnapped for the biggest size. Nurture nappies used to have a four Wonderwraps special, not sure if it's still there, but worth asking that site.

OSFA covers are very thin on the ground, i think WOnderwraps is the only one i've come across in over a year of reseraching MCN.

Have you seen much MCN in real life?
this can really help

ozclothnappies yahoo group has a database
there is a list of IN REAL LIFE shops - check for where you are
there is a list of cloth mamas who are happy to show you their stash

on Nappycino, check the meetup thread for your area

Baby and CHild Expos have MCN stalls

these are all ways to see the MCN in real life. Instead of reading about what a pocket is, pick one up, pull the inserts out, put it together again, feel the fabrics, find out the difference btwn a front snapping closure and a side snapping closure. Some thing sare just way more obvious in real life. i had many lightbulb moments when i saw the MCN for real.

it's a steep learning curve - but then anything new is.

at least you know where to ask, nappycino, ozclothnappies yahoo group, lots of clothie threads on parenting forums - it's good to know they're there - plus start networking in real life with the clothies in your part of the world.
