if you live somewhere hot no covers might be the go as much as possible....lay baby on a lambskin rug or doubled over fleece blanket..??
or even if fleece covers did happen to compress it would help you change a wet bum asap as you'd know
im trying wool with this babe from the start...more so wool covers than knits so they can go in the machineactually im doing as you said and trying it all

I love Tots Bots and Mother-ease (especially Rikki for poo-spolsions). I'm not a fan of Bummis wraps at all but that may just be the fit on Josie.

I'm trying desperately to enjoy using wool covers but, despite everyone saying they are cooler because of evaporation, the only time Josie gets a heat rash is when I use wool.

If you're concerned about PUL and heat...we live in Dubai and it doesn't get much hotter. Ben spends most of the day outside playing under our carport and he is always wearing Mother-ease nappies and wraps...no problems yet with heat rash for him. I always change him as soon as the nappy is wet though.

It's relatively cool at 41 degrees today!

Nicole ... you have me curious ... what are the summer temperatures like where you live?

I am wondering if the heat rash is being caused more from the thickness [thermal factor] of the wool rather than from wool itself ... if that makes sense ... ie would a slightly finer yarn make a difference? I am thinking of a 5-ply rather than a worsted or aran weight [10 & 12 ply respectively].

ETA ... just saw your next post [before mine showed] ... you are referring more to wool material than something knitted aren't you?
If so ... then I am sorry for the misunderstanding.

I found fleece fine for a NB as they were changed so often wee never had a chance to come through.

I have used Motherease, Baby Beehinds, Tots, Bubba J and Bummis PUL. Our fave was the Baby Beehinds and Bubba J's, mainly due to Eliza's skinny shape. Then the Motherease Air flow. The Tots PUL is nice and thin though . I found Bummis a bit thick and bulky.

This time I will also use wool from birth as my bubbba will be born when it is starting to get hot. I think wool breathes alot better.

Hi Sharyn,

We have some Baby Beehinds wool wraps and a couple of knitted soakers...one much thinner than the other but I have no idea of the ply of either (I do know my Mum knitted the thinner one from Cleckheaton wool/silk yarn).

While it regularly reaches 50degrees (and over) here in the summer, Josie is almost always inside in air-conditioning on those really hot days. If it's hovering in the high 30's I turn the AC off so we get some fresh air!

No matter which wool cover I use on Josie, she has developed a heat rash almost as soon as she wees. This has never happened in PUL.

I used Motherease Rikkis over flats when DD was a newborn (loved the gussets), and Tots Bots over the Tots Bots nappies. Then I discoved Bummis. The quality of Bummis is far superior to the Tots (IMO); the binding on the Tots seemed to show signs of wear very quickly. This was nearly two years ago though, so they might have been improved since then. Sorry, that was a but of a ramble

Thanks everyone for your input.

I think i will just get a few different types and see what works. I know he will come home on 4 hourly feeds...one thing that happens from NICU, so need something that will last the 4 hours

Might have to look into some wool as well.

I use a combination of PUL and fleece covers on my newborn. I use PUL on her during the day and fleece on her at night. She was 3030grams at birth and has only out on about a kilo. Brands I have been using are ZigZag Baby for the PUL covers and Tot Bots for the Fleece Covers. They both have been holding in the explosive poos and do a really great job around her legs.

I used NB Bummis SWW and NB Bambino Mio PUL wraps during the day. My favourite were the Bambino Mio by far. We used knitted woolens at night - We weren't going to use the wool while she was little but she turned out to be a super wee'er so we had no choice really.
Goodluck with your little bubby!
