Default Re: Cloth nappy help

I started with terry flats and started buying one or two different ones as seconds or second-hand. A lot of stores offer their seconds slightly reduced and it's usually only aesthetic. I was buying through NC, so it was people I had heard of a lot.

I make my own, but I am really glad I bought lots of different ones first, because that taught me the sorts of things that suited us and stopped me from sewing a lot that were useless. For example I was going to make fitteds, but realised pretty quickly that pockets were best for us. I discovered that certain shapes just weren't going to fit DD at all, even if the nappy itself was lovely.

If you're going for a starter pack go for one from a reseller that has lots of different things in there, not just the same style. Get a mix of fitteds/AIOs/pockets because you might be surprised which ones work, and get a mix of touch-tape, front snaps, side snaps and snappi closures, because they suit different shapes and styles of bubs. Then you can work out exactly what features you want in your own nappies.

I started out with 6 prefolds, two fitteds and some disposables. When I found cloth was going to work out, we got more prefolds. Later I branched out into Mandy Macs (I like snappis). Now we use prefolds, MMs, pockets and AIOs! It just depends on the time & place as to which nappy we use.

I read up heaps about MCN but then I went and bought cheap nappies off ebay and some secondhand nappies elsewhere. If I could do it all again, I would buy 3 or 4 nappies new of the ones I thought might work for us, see how they went, then buy a brand new stash of 20. That is a minimum stash that leaves room to bulk out with terries, home mades, others you might buy s/h to try or something for a special occasion. I wouldn't bother buying cheap anymore. It's just not worth it.
