Has anyone tried the drop front nappies? I found them on an EC website this afternoon. They look like a normal fitted nappy but have a belt around the front so that you can unsnap the front without them falling right off??

just trying to find a site that has one so i can show you. But i've googled everything i can think of- i can't remember what it was called.
It's just a tube that goes from waist from knee or wherever depending on bub's size. You just lift it up. No button or anything. So more of a tube than a skirt.
All i found so far was this Disana wool cloth diaper cover organic wrap wool baby jacket but it's not what i really mean as this is a sack i think... They are not that unusual! I've seen them around heaps but now that i want one i can't find it!

Doh! I thought it was wool, it's soft at least!

I had a look for it and it is actually organic cotton. I got it from Nature's Cradle for DS3 and you can see it here:

NATURES CRADLE

I also have two 'lambies' that we have been given by my MIL (one was DHs when he was a baby). I used those when the cotton one was in the wash and they were also what I used in the past.

Sorry for misleading you into thinking it was wool!

You guys are great, I love how supportive the cloth community is.

The sack looks good and is what I was thinking of from Michelle's description - good to have a pattern though I'm not the best knitter.

Don't worry about the underlay Kris it actually put me on track with some ideas so it was a very helpful suggestion. I also have a couple of sheepskins lying around somewhere and hadn't thought of that.

Anyway after all of these great comments I have decided to go with (drumroll )...

Some longies for night and 'good', a couple of knitted covers with velcro fastening for my existing fitted nappies, leggings, some bed pads, a couple of those skirt things and for my big purchase (the rest will be homemade) I am going to buy some drop front fitted nappies designed for EC'ing, probably at least a dozen though we'll see where the budget takes us.

Oh boy I hope that sounds good to everyone who gave such good advice!

It sounds a lot when I write it down but I worked out the cost and it will be a hell of a lot cheaper than the $2500 approx I have allready spent on plastics for my son.

Thanks for all of your help and I will now go back to lurking and leave the comments to those who know a lot more about this cloth biz than I do.

I'm planning to EC with cloth backup too. Am thinking lots of prefolds and fitteds, with some pockets and covers for going out, and a PUL pad at night and for nappy free time. I'm totally eyeing off the Disana soakers right now, they look so lush. If it's a winter bub I'd go for lots of gowns and leg warmers so there's less to take off while still keeping bub warm.
