Em was 7lb 3 when born, with skinny legs. For the first 5 weeks we used
  • CK Raphaels (my favourites)
  • Poppets Place (good budget nappy)
  • Swaddlebees fitteds (great when umbilical still attached as has snap down front, smaller fit)
  • Various brands and styles of NB and Small PUL covers (I prefer gussets but have no brand preference)
but she has decided that she absolutely detests feeling wet, even just for a few minutes (screams blue murder!), so have swapped her over to BumGenius OS pockets so she can have a full body stay dry lining (fleece liners weren't good enough for her precious little bottom! ).

I'm impressed with the BG's on a newborn (previously used them on a large 1 year old). I wasn't expecting them to fit her yet, but they are snug around the waist and legs, and not very bulky. No blow-outs or leaks either! Em's a fairly heavy wetter, so am using the full size insert folded down, which is a bit more bulky than the newborn insert would be, and am adding a hemp booster at night.

I've got BBB's too, which fit her well, but seeing as they don't have a stay dry inner, it looks like we won't be needing them anytime soon. Maybe she'll be better as she gets older. I've got some small Bubblebubs coming, and think I will get some Itti's too. I need some show-off nappies ready for summer. DH has said I'm not to get any more nappies , so will have to sneak them in when he's not looking.

Great advice everyone! I have been slowly adding to my stash with nappies you have mentioned although some of them I have not been able to get hold of! Oh well!

I can't wait to try them out now!

newborn nappy shopping is a lot of fun!

I have found that I like the really trim nappies in the first few weeks

I loved the thirsties fitteds (they are velour and so soft on bubs) and the thirsties PUL covers in XS (E was born just shy of 4kg and I only started using smalls at 5 weeks). The covers have gussets and are very soft also.

Also loved Raphaels with the thirsties covers.

Both these options are almost as trim as a disposable

I loved prefolds to begin with and used Bummis NB whisper wraps. I also used some Pookey Pockets NB quickdrys.....these were cute! I also tried out a Motherease Sandy fitted nappy and Rikki cover....these were great too! But for ease, drying and cheap $$$ I dont think you can go past the prefolds and covers system. Plus you can use the prefolds as boosters or stuffers or even spew rags later on

I made a stash of NB size fitteds using the Very Baby AIO pattern and they were excellent, trim, easy to use but I should have made them more absorbent. They fitted my 8pound bub for a month. I used them with Bummis NB covers and would use that system again. I've now got some cute Tooshies Bamboo delights and I reckon they would fit a newborn, wish I'd had them from the start!

Another huge pre-folds fan here....sooooooo versatile, quick drying, trim fitting and they are so very useful even once you don't use them as a nappy any longer. (burp cloth, change mat on the go etc etc)

I love Bambino Mio covers...great fit and gussets to control all of those newborn poo explosions. I know many love Bummis, but I hated them. Too thick, bulky and just not a good fit on my girl. Once the poo-spolsions settle, I also love Tots Bots, Baby Beehinds and Motherease wraps.

So much fun preparing for a newborn!

Hi

In the very early days when I was changing her like 10-12 times a day I would use a bamboo foldup from BB folded in half inside a NB Thirsties cover. I put a microfleece liner too on top of the foldup. The BB foldups are great for so many things that I recommend getting a few. I use them to boost nappies now all the time. And sometimes when she was a bit older and I had run out of nappies because I forgot to wash I would put them inside a S cover and they did fine Sometimes I would put two inside. I use them to boost normal nappies that dont last long and also to boost the BB one size fitted for night time.

I loved Thirsties covers and also Tot Bots because of the gussets.

For more MCN type nappies I liked the bubblebubs a lot and also the bitti boo fitteds as well as the Tot Bots fitteds

HTH

I have an Imse Vimse organic velour cover which is my absolute fave PUL cover.

I didnt seem to have a poosplosion issue here really... It happened maybe four or five times all up?

we like mandy macs here on our 9 day old newborn. I used flanalette nappies with a bummis cover in hospital and it worked great! I also love my small bubblebubs...my baby was born at 8lbs but is around 7lbs 8oz at the moment.
