Hi,
I have done a lot of searching various forums and sites for advice on what to stock up on for my first baby due in October. Here is my plan for half of what I need with the rest to follow once I work out which nappies work well for our baby: 4 Fitted - Size 0 4 Fitted - OSFA/M 3 AIO’s – small size 1 pocket – one size 12 prefolds 2 newborn PUL covers 2 small PUL covers 1 small Fleece cover 1 wool cover Can you let me know if this looks about right? I am wondering if perhaps I should be getting a couple of AIO's in the newborn size rather than small? Schmidsta |

I agree with Suzanne - save the AIO's for when babys older. Forget the NB covers unless your babys really tiny. Your list gives you a good variety of different types to try and its quick and easy to get more of whatever you find works after babys born.

I'm going to disagree with not getting covers in NB size, or XS sizing. I only got two in XS (Thirsties brand) myself, and they are still fitting Freya fine and I"m glad I had them as the small sizes in the same brand and others were just a little too big to start - especially over sized nappies or prefolds. They are starting to be a better fit now, but I found the XS much better around her legs - and Freya was 4.2kg (9lb 5oz) at birth, so not a small bubba - so I'd recommend getting at least a few, jic your bub is on the smaller side. Definitely try for secondhand or on sale at least, if you can though, because at 5 weeks I can see that the rise is going to be too short on Freya pretty soon so I'll be done with them shortly I'm sure.
I'd be getting some more OSFM and/or some more sized fitteds at least. Definitely more covers though, whatever type - I have 7 and sometimes that's not been enough! |

Your list looks good to me
I'd definitely get the covers in NB size, my first was 3.5kg born and the smalls didnt fit him properly around the legs until he was 3 or 4 weeks old. I have a whole stack of NB covers ready to go for my twin girls. I'd stick with the small AIOs though as you'll get more wear out of them for the money. OSFM tend to be quite bulky on newbies. I didn't use our ones until Ollie was around 8 weeks old. You might be better off getting more smalls with a good weight range and save buying the OSFM until bubs is born so you can use all your nappies from the beginning.

I personally would bother with the nb AIO's, I got some and they really didn't get all that much use (3-4 weeks). I could have really just got buy with my fitted supply and gone straight into smalls.
Wet bags are for putting your dirty nappies in when out and about. Plus I use one to keep my clean wipes and soapy wash in.

Ditto with Tinks
![]() On the covers, I used my 2 NB covers all the time when NB, at 3kg birth weight these NB covers were the only ones that fit well and I was so glad I had them! i'd stick with the AIO'd in small too, more wear and they are best for going out/babysitters/dads which you probably won't be using until bubs is in small sizing anyway. Great stash you have, you've done a fab job! It's so confusing to start with . GL

My little buba- well sort of little at 3.8kg fit into NB covers for a time, but i wouldnt bother getting many.
I mainly use woolen covers on my little one. I like the way they breathe and cirulatate the air etc... also we are prone to nappy rash, so the wool helps avoid that. I have found personally to invest in OSFM better and have only a few smaller nappies, and when they are little just wash a bit more often and invest the money in nappies that fit a bit longer.

You can also use a OSFM pocket nappy (unstuffed) as a cover over terry squares or fitteds on a newborn. Pics here. Might come in handy if you run short on covers.
I'd get an extra 12 prefolds or a pack of terry squares. There will be days when you just can't keep up with the washing, so they'll come in handy. Prefolds also make good night nappy boosters or pocket stuffers when baby outgrows using them with a snappi as a newborn nappy. I'm another that would wait til baby is bigger (in our family, I'd wait til they're on solids!) to use the AIOs. My kids have a tendency to explode out the leg-holes as breastfed newborns, it's less messy with a fitted + cover as there's two layers of elastic. But I do start using pockets to go out & about early on, because I can also use the unstuffed pocket as a spare cover. |
