With the widget I didn't find MCN for about 6 months so she went straight into large. I kept using terry flats and bought one of various different sorts until I worked out what worked well for us. I found that there were some nappies that sounded like they were perfect, or looked gorgeous, but just didn't work actually on the baby and for our lifestyle.
With midget I only looked at OSFA. I just can't stand the idea of having her grow out of nappies, and given that she's already in some of the larges from her sister I'm really annoyed that I made her a beautiful minkee cover that is now on her big sister's doll But of course not every baby grows so fast.So I suppose my advice would be to wait. Have a few nice nappies to use but mostly have a stash of flats or prefolds and covers. Then when bub arrives you can see which nappies work best for you and which fit your washing routine and lifestyle. Deb I was washing every day at first, but we were in the tropical wet season and it took a while to dry everything. I didn't find it a chore to put them through because I was also doing a load of clothes from my happy chucker every day.

I have heaps of of prefolds, fitteds, AIO and flats.
![]() ![]() But I find that I mostly use the newborn fitteds with a cover. They are a small/medium so they fit Sophie now on the smallest snap setting and should fit her until about 9-12 months, if her sister is anything to go by. Sophie was 2.8kg at her smallest so she will get heaps of wear out them. So I really don't see it as a waste as when I have finished with them I can always forward them on or sell them. That will help fund later purchases. I wash everyday, I just rinse the newborn poo off and put the nappies in with everything else. That keeps them in mint condition. If you want to wash every second day, I would recommend enough (of whatever type of nappy you choose) would be about 18-24 nappies. That is based on having to change the nappy AT LEAST every time they wake (in reality it is usually twice ).Perhaps try and pick up some good second hand sized nappies to help build your stash. |

We have a mixture (6 small pockets, 5 AIOs, about 14 fitteds and then prefolds for back-up). We use sposies for overnight ATM. DH has been washing everyday and I have found that amount heaps - I haven't had to touch the prefolds or my OSFA nappies. Sam is a poochampion with a major in poosplosions so we have been getting some blowouts from the AIOs but the pockets are holding and the fitteds work a treat.
Have fun starting to build up your stash

I ma thinking of using disposables for the first few weeks, perhaps you could do that Mel until you have enough in your stash.

). I have found the fitted/ cover combo works best for containment, especially at night. The AIO's work well during the day when her sleeps are shorter.I would suggest checking the measurements, problem is that you won't know your bub's measurements or how skinny their legs are going to be until they are born. Maya had massive chubba legs and Sophie has skinny little stick legs.

How many is a good amount to wash every 2nd day? Did you wash every day or less?
24 nappies is a good guide to wash every second day - 8 for each day. This is what I did, just put the wash on first thing every second morning, or even better DH did it. In summer they are dry by the arvo, in winter maybe the next morning. For your newborn stash do you have any bigger sized nappies, or did/will you get them later? Wait and see what suits. My fav nappys when Molly was small was tots bots bamboozles as they fit her when she was tiny (<3kg) but still fit till 9 months because they only come in 2 sizes so are designed to fit longer . Not as cheap as others but you dont need s, m then lg sizes. There are other 2 size nappies around. I have just realised I only have about 5 nappies that I really want to use (OSFA) so I want to get a whole bunch more, hoping to swap heaps. I have lots of large AIO's etc, which I loved but rather than have them sit there for 12 months, I think Im better off swapping them for something I can use the whole time. If your AIOs are in good condition and money isnt really tight I would hold onto them as you know you like them and know what condition they are in. I didnt really like OSFA on Molly for a long time as they were just too bulky under clothes. I have cute tooshies OSFA this time and they seem smaller fitting so will see how they are. Good luck choosing/swapping what else to get - it is hard to decide what will fit, what is good value etc., isnt it! Shara |
