I've swaddled summer and winter bubs and used mainly fleece and wool, with an occassional PUL cover. So long as the nappy is absorbent enough, you won't have leaks - we used terry flats as a newborn and then graduated to fitteds for night, when she was sleeping a good stretch at about 4 weeks of age. Oh and we used muslin wraps.

i dont think it matters, all NB are at risk of compression as they are always held or on their backs - swaddled or not
they also get changed fairly reguarly....the only time id be careful is the first few weeks where they can have 3 hour long sleeps - and i only avoided cheap fleece - i used pul, malden mills fleece and wool - and it was all fine fleece is so soft and snuggly/comfy for nb's - i loved it. i found bummi's a bit harsh, thirsties pul very soft and tots bots prints almost as nice but not as trim in the crotch - but the MM fleece seemed the softest, and i had no worries with wool either

I didn't use PUL at all with my 2nd as I was a wool girly. I used wool and fleece (sparingly) and swaddled liek you wouldn't believe - I don't think a contortonist could have gotten out. You do need to watch for compression leaks with both. But if you are like me and lucky to get 1 1/2 hours out of a nappy on a littlie, you won't have an issue. If you have a long sleeper or a heavy wee'r which boys tend to be (not all) you'll need to look at some boosters or some more absorbant nappies.
And in terms of money, my stash has cost me about $4000 over the years including woolies, covers nappies flats and the like. But I have had 2 in cloth and that's over nearly 4 years. Much cheaper than sposies and some of my stuff will be passed on to someone else when it's not being used any more here. Boosting nappies is were you add extra absorbant layers - like lay in boosters or cut down flats or prefolds. I could never have gotten away with prefolds on their own - plus they don't fit real well on my boy. If you intend on making your own prefolds, you need a fabric that will snappy IMO. I don't think bamboo velour will but terry certainly does. Unless you intend on using pins which is cool too.
