Default Using terry cloths

on a newborn, what are some suggestion on covers, is it better to just go with smalls, my first 2 grew really quickly, second was 3.5kgs at birth, or should I get a couple of newborn covers?

How many covers will I need?
And overnight?

Thanks

i had a very short attempt with flats and covers on a nb, but during that attempt, i coudln't get any of the nb covers to go over the flats successfully.

for mcn to work, to achieve waterproofness, the concept is that the cover MUST COVER 100% of the nappy underneath (whatever style nappy that may be).

flats are bulkier than other styles of nappy.

i could fit prefolds, contours, foldups inside the newborn covers sizes. But not the flats. I attempted bamboo terry flats - so bulkier than other MCN, but a bit trimmer than cotton terry flats.

i had a 3.79kg bub.

i did hear the other day, that Thirsties nb size covers are on the generous size, though.

For overnight, i didn't try this, but have read about it (on this forum) - of people DOUBLE NAPPYING for night. THat is, they put one flat on bub and snappi it shut. THen put a second flat over the first one, and snappi that shut. Then a cover. I am assuming you would need maybe a bigger size cover e.g the medium, to fit adequately over TWO flat nappies.

I'm sure plenty of people who have used / are using flats heaps on their nb/s will come along to give you the real low down.

Don't bother with newborns, in fact even small might not be worth it.
My littlest one has been in medium covers since about 10 weeks and that wasn't on the smallest setting. Although I really only do covers at night, during the day I use pockets if we're going out or at home change flats whenever wet. You might want to look at some of the covers that only have two sizes, they tend to fit a wider range. I got a Tots Bots cover second hand and it's been great, still going.
She was 3.8kg at birth and has grown really quickly.

Yeah, I would skip the NB sized covers. We started with Small BBH covers over terry flats and fitteds. It worked well for us. DS was 4kg, but has never been chubby.

Unfortunately I didn't know about any of the fabulous covers when mine were new, but I did use terry flats. I agree with pp that it would probably be better to go with smalls, newborns grow so quickly.

With the number of covers, I have no idea. I think I had about 10 fluffy covers and a couple of revolting PVC. Because the covers didn't fit that well, and it was really warm during the day when Caelan was born I would just put him in a nappy and I would lie a terry flat underneath him.

With night time, when they're new you're up and down with them quite a bit anyway so I didn't bother with double-nappying until they were a few months old. To double-nappy when they were little I would do a triangle fold for the outer nappy and then use my normal fold for the inner nappy IYKWIM. I found that way that I only needed to use one snappi. Now C's older I use the kite fold and have the 2 nappies on top of each other so they fold up together. Does that make sense?

I love my longies and flongies for overnight, but I didn't know about them when the boys were new. Maybe someone else can help you with that.

As a newborn we used either flanny flats or terries, and we used pul snibs over them successfully. We also used some of the eenee pullon pul covers ( I think in a small size) and small motherease. The small motherease fitted for a long long time

I agree with Melanie, you don't need to double nappy for a newborn or small baby as you're up so often to them and changing regularly. Once they do need extra padding at night you can also boost with a trifold; we love bamboo for this.

I used fluffies cover in the beginning before I knew about MCN (they were in amongst all the clothes my sister gave me from her kids) & I found them good. Once I discovered MCN I used pul covers - then I discovered wool .

I think I had about 6 pul covers & about 4 wool covers.

I used flats full time for 9 months, then discovered mcn! Flats worked really well for the first 6 months. I would go with small covers, not newborn. Flats are bulkier, but I had a 4.36kg baby, so newborns would have been a waste.

I think you would need 4-6 covers at a minimum. I tend to rotate them, but all you need is a few poo escapes into the cover and your stash is down. PUL covers dry really quick.

I also did not start doubling nappies until about 6 months, as would change her when I fed her in the night. I personally will not double again now I have nice MCNs. Otherwise it is too bulky and really hard to put clothes over the top. Would highly recommend buying a few osfm bamboo nappies for nights.

yes there is trouble getting mcn style PUL covers to fit over the flats properly. I did not start on cloth till DS was about 5 months, at that stage the only covers I found to fit over were the motherease ones.

Looking around more now, the eenees pull up ones would be great.

I did also stumble accross some PUL covers that are specifically made for use over terry flats. I will try and track them down again for you (unless someone wants to beat me to that).
