Question what I need for newborn: starting from scratch

Hi everyone,
would love some insight into what I should be getting for bubs #2 due december. I can't even find the terry squares I had but barely used (1 week)with #1 (think lost in move) so am starting from scratch and have no real experience with cloth. ds son was 3.5kg and was never a chubby bub, expecting similar from sibling perhaps a little smaller going on estimates so far. I have had a poke around online and thought that ordering the following would be good, please critique!!!!:

- 1 infant Bummis diapering kit
(36 cotton prefolds + 6 bummis sww come in small sizing I think?)
- 4-6 x thirsties or bummis superbrites covers xs/newborn
- newborn or small fleece covers HOW MANY AND WHICH SIZE?
- 1 trial stash from nurture nappies
( 1 bumgenius 3.0, 1 tots bots bamboozle, 1 baby greens growing greens, 1 itti bitti d'lish, 1 bummis superbrite cover, 1 wetbag and bio liners) WHICH SIZE FOR FITTED AND COVER?
- nappy bucket
- another wetbag or two?
- pack of snappis
- terry squares 6-12?
- 2 or 3 aio newborn bumgenius (for outings and they are on sale!)
- mesh bags for laundering the pockets/fitteds/covers
- a couple of silk liners for rashes

How does that sound? Already purchased 1 dozen soft terry face washers from kmart on special to use as wipes, how many more will I need? maybe have 3 dozen in total? I dont know if this is too much or too little to get started.......eek!
could anyone advise about the newborn vs small covers in relation to keeping the cord site nappy free? we had problems with ds as despite folding sposie down it kept popping back up and he ended up with an infection in the hot weather. Anything else I have forgotten please let me know I am grateful for any assistance :-)

I don't see any wipes on yor list, so maybe you'd consider getting some of those... I probably wouldn't get any more than 6 covers either, but that's just me. I don't use a mesh bag for washing
either, didn't think you needed that but someone might pop along and teach me otherwise...
Good luck with it all!

Thanks Dit! I bought 1 dozen soft terry face washers from kmart a few days ago, thought I might get some more or try big W. do you use plain water on your wipes or a wash/solution of some description? DS has sensitive skin so thinking sibling be similar. with covers the bummis prefold kit comes with 6 already but they are size small not newborn from what I can make out, for poo containment I need NB covers is that right?

- 1 infant Bummis diapering kit
(36 cotton prefolds + 6 bummis sww come in small sizing I think?)

I didn't get one of these but I know a lot of people love the cotton prefolds. Probably a good buy!

- 4-6 x thirsties or bummis superbrites covers xs/newborn

I honestly don't think you'll need these if you are getting the 6 SWW with your kit. Unless you want to get some XS thirsties, but I doubt they will fit over the cotton prefolds you get in your kit, at least not for long. Unless you are expecting a really small bub, I'd not bother with these myself, if you get the Bummis kit.

- newborn or small fleece covers HOW MANY AND WHICH SIZE?

I have not had success with fleece until recently (nearly four months old) so I'd say don't bother with fleece either, but I'm sure someone else will come along and tell you they found fleece wonderful I personally found PUL the best way to go in the early weeks. I also find that fleece holds smells, which annoys me a bit.

- 1 trial stash from nurture nappies
( 1 bumgenius 3.0, 1 tots bots bamboozle, 1 baby greens growing greens, 1 itti bitti d'lish, 1 bummis superbrite cover, 1 wetbag and bio liners) WHICH SIZE FOR FITTED AND COVER?

good way to try a few different brands and see if you like them. Depends on how big you think your bub might be whether you get newborn or small sizing. My bubs were all big so I'd be going for small sizes if it was me.

- terry squares 6-12?

only if you want to use terry squares I guess. I never did, but I did have a pack of 12 I bought with my first one, that I'm still using as burp cloths.

- 2 or 3 aio newborn bumgenius (for outings and they are on sale!)

I also wouldn't personally bother with AIO for a newborn, based on my own experiences with poo I'm still getting poo blowouts in AIOs now at nearly 4 months I think that fitteds and covers are a much more reliable option for the first month or so. I'd be saving my money and using it to buy AIOs in Small and above, if you really want to get AIOs.

- mesh bags for laundering the pockets/fitteds/covers

I've never used a bag of any sort to wash my nappies in. Not neccesary IMO. Unless you've got some fleece that you want to keep nice.

- a couple of silk liners for rashes

Never used these either, I just give nappy free time and we have no rash problems. It's free

As for wipes, if you think you've got enough, double that number and then maybe double it again I can't believe how many wipes we go through here.

The Thirsties covers in XS were great for the first two weeks when the cord stump/clamp was still attached. Has a little dip in the front of it to accommodate it. Also in terms of nappies, the Kissaluvs size 0 has a snap down front to accommodate the cord. I found those excellent.

you just need a cover that fits well if your small covers fit well, then they will contain poo. If you've got a small bub, then small coves might be a bit too big, but otherwise they will work just fine, as long as the nappy is fully enclosed in your cover.

there is a nb section with tips here too.

i agee with Kim,

sounds like you prob have too many covers, fleece didnt work for us, i used wool such as baby behind wool covers and knitteds.

I loved OSFM fitteds after about 3w old. and AIO after about 1yo.

I actually only had 2 NB and 2 small

Sam was 7lb8 at birth which I think is around 3.5 kg. We used a combo of fitteds with a low rise and motherease, very baby or stacinator covers with a high rise for the first two weeks. I did use some NB aios (few blowouts there) and quite a few sposies at night and on outings . When he was 3 weeks we went into cloth 'proper'. Our NB sizes were pretty much grown out of by then . Now we are mainly all in smalls for nappies, covers, pockets and AIOS. Having 2 in cloth I go through lots of wipes - I love bubblebubs foamy wipes wash for cleaning up both my toddler and baby.
