Red face The plan thus far ......

As mentioned in my intro post, I have been doing heaps and heaps of research and this is my plan of attack at the moment (though it seems to keep changing the more research I do ). I welcome any suggestions/changes/feedback you have for me ...

I intially thought that I would use disposibles for a few weeks and then switch to MCN, but have since decided to try cloth right from the start! So here goes:

    I already have:
    a small BBH AIO
a small itti bitti snap in

I am thinking of getting for starters:
    - 24 bamboo prefolds (booroi, both day and overnight use)
    - 4 small pul wraps (again booroi)
    - 3 small wool covers (at the moment I am eyeing off loveybum wool pull up covers)
    - several cute tooshies bamboo foldups (to boost prefolds for overnight use)
    - a few (4-6 if I can control myself!) pocket nappies for "good" use (ie going into public eyeing off ecobubs small wool pocket nappies)
    - 6 cute tooshies bamboo (for over night once bub stops pooping or starts sleeping through - lord let that be quickly!! and to be used until it fits no longer)

After that the plan is to move into mainly medium and OSFM pockets and a few AIO's which will hopefully see bub out to toilet training if I am smart. I am leaning towards pockets more because I live in Southern Vic and drying time (especially in winter) is a huge consideration for me!

DH has not set a budget restriction on me, but I am concious of not over spending too much ... hopefully I can pick some up second hand ones to help the purse strings stretch a bit further. I am also passing these nappies onto my sister so whilst it may seem like I am buying a lot and choosing expensive options (ie getting sized pocket nappies), I would like the stash to be in fairly good nic when i pass it on to my sis. I have also subscribed to just about every website I can, so I can be informed of their specials and buy buy buy!

Well ladies what do you think ........

Looks good - the prefolds you can also use as pocket stuffers later. The only thing you might add might be liners??

Thanks for your feed back Megan .... I have only started thinking about liners just this morning!!! do you need to use liners in prefolds?

Also been thinking that bamboo prefolds are going to take a while to dry that I should perhaps scale back to only 12 and then get 12 premium cotton prefolds ...... I understand not as absorbant, but quicker to dry which will be a blessing I think. I will stick to the bamboo ones at night and cotton/pocket nappies during the day?

I accidently slipped last night and placed 4 ecobub small pockets on layby ....... in my defence they were on special!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Keep it coming ladies

I will give you another perspective here

For DS I used Flats till the OSFM fitted nappies fit well. Then when he was about 6 months old large sized nappis fit so I bought a few pocket nappies and some prettier fitted nappies.

I also found I used PUL mainly when he was young and then moved to wool at about 4 months old. By 6 months I wasnt using PUL covers anymore, I was using a pocket under jeans etc and woolies over fitted nappies.

As for DD I used Bits for Bots stretchie bamboo prefolds and bambams (as you can fold down the rise) till OSFM fitted nappies fit. (I did use other fitted nappies but I found prefolds and bambams were the best) I then used the OSFM when I was at home and the small fitted nappies and prefolds when out as they were trimmer. I continued to use the prefolds etc till about 4 months. By then the OSFM fit really well. I also stopped using PUL covers at about the same time, so about 4 months. Now that I think about it, pretty much when small covers stopped fitting I stopped using PUL covers. I used 4 XS and S thirsties on DD and small Bummis on DS.

So, if I were to do it all over again, I would only get prefolds and bambams (maybe 10 or so of each for the first 4 months or so, 4 small PUL and then some pretty hand knit soakers and longies for 'show off' (DD just stopped fitting her NB woolies now she is 7 months old) I would also get some OSFM fitted nappies like BabyBeehinds or Moasic Moon (I really like the MM on both DS and DD). Then you can use the boosters out of the OSFM nappies in your prefolds etc. Then, at about 4-6 months I would get some large nappies like Itti's ot mediums like swaddlebees ( you can use your prefolds as boosters in these)

I thinks thats it from me

Here are some links for you:

Prefolds Bumboo, Bamboo Nappies and Nappy Products
Prefolds Bits for Bots - Bamboo stretch terry prefold (Powered by CubeCart) (she is out of stock at the moment, you might like to email her if you are interested)
Moasic Moon thecraftycaterpillar (Kelly doesnt have much in stock either, you can email her as well)

EDIT: I am in SE Melb as well Basically drying times directly reflects how much liquid a nappy holds. A bamboo prefold will take 2 days to dry.

Two days to dry!!!!!! I thought they would take a while to dry, but not that long .. just goes to show how absorbant they are .... it is just reinforcing for me not to have all of my prefolds bamboo. Cotton prefolds boosted with bamboo are sounding very good at this stage (and they are far easier on the ol' budget), with some bamboo ones for night time use. Also that I should really really have pocket nappies with heaps of spare bamboo inserts ........

Thanks for all the links ... it is a bit overwhelming just how many online napy shops there are, it feels like I discover at least a few new ones every day.

Would I be correct in saying that the bambam bamboos are very similar to the cute tooshies bamboo? I will have to look into the similarities and differences a little closer!

From what I can tell we kind of have the same game plan Pobie, prefolds for first few months and when they get too big for that OSFM pockets ( I love love love the look of mini lala's and I am hoping that a medium ecobubs will last throuh to toilet training) coupled with medium/large AIOS (like BBH's and itti bitti snap ins) and a nice fitted bamboo nappy with a woolen cover for over night ... we just might be executing it a little differently

I would still look at getting quite a few bamboo prefolds, as the others have said you can use them as pocket inserts later, and as you want to do mostly pockets that would save you money in the long run! Maybe get the 24 prefolds plus 12 extra cotton prefolds too?

The bam bams are for NB babies wheres the Cute tooshies are OSFM and would be bulkier on a NB.

I wouldn't buy any of the larger size nappies until your bubba is a bit bigger, as you won't know what type of nappy will suit you and baby best until you've tried a few, plus their shapes change so different nappies fit better at different stages. And some nappies just don't suit some babies shapes at all - so having 6 or 12 nappies sitting there that will never be used is a waste!!

Yep ... two days to dry! I'm also in Melbourne and the bamboo inserts we have for our GreenKids pockets take two days to dry, but the pockets dry ever so quickly ... I also have some homemade terry prefolds that I use as backup in case the drying doesn't happen in time, but mostly it's OK - I have 13 GK pockets and 4 itti bitti d'lish that I use during the day, and that's usually enough to allow me to wash every second day. But I do get to the end of the stash ...

I was planning on using bamboo prefolds at night for a while, I would not consider using the cute tooshie until bub stopped pooing or was sleeping thru (which I hope will happen at the same time )

I will try not to ... but no promises !!! minilala's only come up every so often so I will just quietly buy a few when I can (if I can) and queitly store them at the very back of the cupboard so DH doesn't spy them!!! The rest I will wait (impatiently!)
