Default Newborn Nappies or Skip to Small?

    Hi everyone,

I'm just wondering, is it better to skip to size small when buying MCNs' and just use terry flats to start with?

I guess I'm just unsure as to how long bub would be in a Newborn size.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

    Thanks!

For #3, we began with a one-size nappy (home made) Snappi closure with gussets. It was very versatile and lasted for ages. Def could fit him at NB and he wasn't that big at 7lb 14oz. So I didn't have NB ones. He was into med covers by 5 weeks old lol because he had rolls on his rolls real quick and was 6mth weight at 3mths. #2 was slim all the way for a LONG time and NB would have fit for much longer. So even if they are similar birth weights, it's no guarantee they'll grow at the same rate or in the same spots (thighs/bum/belly/height etc)

for #5 I had a tonne of fabric to use up, so I did make some NB ones. They were very cute LOL and great trim fit, esp around the umbilical area. He was just under 9lb born and they did fit for longer than I expected, but not excessively so. We're now into home made mediums that I've made S/M - the front folds down if it needs to be smaller and when the front isn't folded down it's a medium. He was into those by about... I dunno 8 weeks ish?
So we did NB but only because I could make them.

Prefolds are another option for smaller nappies on a smaller bum.
Flats I found too big/bulky but we did them for #1 and #2 at a few weeks old. We used flannel nappies when they were NB Kristy's Gallery :: The No-pins-no-Snappi newborn flannel nappy fold with the no pins no Snappi fold.

Im just using prefolds and flats with covers for the first few months. I have a few small mcn to use as covers (and maybe one or 2 newborn covers) but I have heaps of OSFM and mediums, then will stock up on large.

From what I found out, the newborn and even small dont last that long, so prefolds and flats are better if you dont want to spend too much on something that might only fit for a couple of months.

Flats for the first few weeks here as well and then into OSFM. If you have a little extra cash prefolds and small snappi fitted nappies are lovely as well. We used Bambams cause you can fold down the rise for NB's.

We use bamboo prefolds here too and they are great for the newborn stage. We have some PUL covers but wool covers have been our favs. We do have 5 newborn BBH magicals that we take for going out and they still fit now at 8 weeks - although clem is smallish. I got them on sale for $15 each and although they are great and im glad i got them i dont think i wouldnt want to have spent more than i did on them, Hope that helps.

I think newborn nappies are quite uneconomical unless you get them secondhand at a good price. DS was only an average sized baby and he fit into small nappies at 2 weeks of age.

it depends on the size of your bub
my bubs have all been on the smaller side so i have got some NB snappiable fitteds, mostly second hand and some prefolds and flats too.

i think it depends on how many kids u are planning on having! use them for one bub and yeah skip to small, going to use them more then once? well then splurge as they are cute, they fit better under the itti bitti 0000 etc clothing, etc! plus eh if they get stained with the poo of doom (the first ones) u don't then have to use the stained nappy for months on end =p plus they are really cute!!

this is a hard question to answer because it is so hard to 'guess' what size bub will be! I was told baby would be an average sized baby, so bought some NB prefolds and 2NB covers, he was 9 pounds!! and of course at that size out of them by 6 weeks old. I am pretty sure I'll use them as additional filling, but if I don't have a second bub, they won't have been that good an investment.
