Default Heavy wetter - fleece not an option!

Hi - I am new here by the way! My little boy has been in cloth since he was a week old and we have had no problem until recently.. he is now sleeping on his tummy and has become a heavy wetter. So we are waking at 3am to a wet cold and cranky baby!

Currently he wears a BBH that is boosted and a normal BBH PUL cover. The problem I have is that I am allergic to wool as is my mum and so far my baby looks to be sensitive also so WOOL covers are not an option..

Does anyone have a suggestion because I am not sure what to do!

Thank you

Hi Bec! Welcome to Nappycino!

My DD2 is a heavy wetter. I ended up using just a normal PUL cover over a very well boosted night nappy. I used Motherease air-flow in a size or 2 up because of the bulk of the night nappy. I find the Motherease to be a more reliable cover as I got wicking on the tabs of the BBH PUL covers. The Motherease airflow is a snapping cover so no wicking. That worked great until she started sleeping on her side and now she wets out the side of her nappy which I still haven't solved. While many people won't use PUL at night, I have used it and it worked fine for me.

The other option may be a fleece cover. I have never used one but they seem to get good reviews good luck with it

I use a pul cover and then wool longies, but maybe you could try a pair of fleece pants over the pul cover instead. Also are you getting a good seal at the top of the cover, ie is the cover big enough as I find I need to use a much bigger size cover to make sure he can't leak out the front when on his belly, iykwim?

Ooh yes fleece! I just received my Bear Bottoms MM fleece cover and it works GREAT! DD is a heavy wetter also. We use a Wild Child or Lotus atm for overnight (have a VBSN and a Whizz Kidz on the way).
Best thing with fleece too - dries almost instantly!

Fleece is a pretty general term

in MCN, you can talk about
ABSORBENT types of fleece e.g hemp fleece, bamboo fleece
WATER RESISTANT types of fleece e.g polar fleece, malden mills fleece
STAY DRY fleece e.g microfleece that you use for liners, or inner of pocket nappies for e.g

there are night nappies that specifically use Malden Mills Windpro fleece for their outer, you can buy Malden Mills windpro fleece covers, i find these much more waterproof than two layers of polar fleece.

If you wish to avoid wool, i would suggest

- Poochies* covers (if you can find them 2nd hand, i don't think they are beign made anymore)
- Sugarpeas* side snaps covers
- Staccinator Deluxe covers
- Swaddlebees fleece covers
- Bear Bottoms* pullup style soakers
all these are made from MM fleece, the ones asterisked (*) use windpro.

Measure your baby's rise over the night nappy to help you work out which size cover to get.

Night nappies are bulkier than day nappies, so sometimes you'll need a bigger sized cover to get over the night nappy.

WRT wool
sometimes it's not the WOOL that people are reacting to, it's the DYES and PROCESSES the wool is put thru that people's skin reacts to. There are organic wool options like Disana soakers and Lanacare soakers. Many handknitted woollies for MCN are dyed using organic dyes to avoid this. not saying this WILL solve your dilemna, just something to consider.

I would suggest try the MM fleece covers, I wasn't convinced that these would work, DS2 at one stage was a mega wee machine, let me put it this way before i went cloth for night I'd be using 2 sposies on him and he would wee through both.
For me I found pockets or covers that you could boost to the max would work.
I'd buy or make covers the next size up so you have the space for boosting.

Hi Bec, and welcome to here in case I missed your intro elsewhere! lol

only thing I can think of apart from the above posts is
flongies? (fleece long pants that work as a cover)
we had great success with Longies (wool ones) and I was
keen to try Flongies for the same/similar reason
also don't have to worry about clothing working it's way between the nappy cover
and nappy resulting in wicking, because the flongies cover the nappy/crotch/thighs...

(am guessing your title is meant to be 'wool' not an option? If so I'm sure a friendly mod will help you out with altering it only ask coz I had to re read your OP twice lol to make sure I read wool/fleece)

so we had a PUL outer fleece inner pocket nappy (PeaPods or Fuzzi Bunz), with only bamboo inserts, then
wool longies/soaker over the top - the PUL did the main containment and the
wool offered that bit 'extra' for overtime pee, and more evapouration...
sounds like a double whammy but it worked and it was a good option so I was happy
and so was Zeke's bum!

dunno if it would work the same with flongies instead of wool longies but can't see why not?

all polyester fleeces are water resistant and 'staydry' and can be used as liners
microfleece is good quality and thinner. MM is even betterthey sometimes have thinner stuff great for liners polar fleece is more average imo - thicker and pills more-but can be used.

agree with all that good advice dedicated night nappies and covers as just easier bamboo is supposedly more absorbent than hemp too

I have a recollection that our very own Aunty Sharyn has devised a knitted acrylic soaker which would also work very well.
Maybe send her a pm or something???
