Default Anyone know computer CPR?

My 6mth (hmm maybe 9mths?) MacBook died tonight It was acting funny this afternoon so I shut it down and when I switched it on tonight, it's not starting up. Just gives the startup tone and then nothing- completely blank screen.

Anyone got any ideas what to do? I've tried everything in the instructions book and now I'm ready to reinstall Mac OS X but not sure I want to do that. Also, before I do that I need to backup everything onto USB drive if possibly

Oh why didn't I back up????

Have you checked the mac site to make sure there are no recalls on anything in your computer? Does happen from time to time?

Is there a 12 month warranty on the computer itself (I think there is but I could be wrong). Could be worth calling mac and asking them. Might be a simple fix and they may just tell you even if you no longer have the phone support.

I have a vague memory that my ibook did that at some point, I so cannot remember what we did to fix it. I remember stressing out about repairs etc, but was all good in the end. I will keep thinking on it.

Call mac support. They are awesome! I had an issue a while back. We went through some steps and then they gave me a number to take to my local mac seller and it was all sorted free of charge.

My laptop died last week, exactly a year to the day since we bought it. Thankfully we bought an extended warrenty as it was the battery AND the motherboard, both of which have now been replaced. We didn't lose any info

I spoke to a guy at MacSupport this morning and told him what had happened and what I had tried. I hadn't reset the PRAM because I was unsure it needed that but he assured me it was worth a go so we tried and nothing. Basically it needs OS X reinstalling (my next step lol) and I can retrieve my files my starting up in a different mode and connecting to a friend's macbook. Hers will recognise mine as an external hard drive and I can save all my stuff Going to try fixing it on Sunday. I think it's the end of my study though...this was the last straw...

At least you now know what needs to be done, and dont have to stress about losing all your files.

Ok so I'm stressing about losing my files now....I spoke to someone at MacSupport for the fourth time today and 'the plan' did not work My 9mth old MacBook was pronounced dead at 4pm this afternoon and needs to be sent away (1500km) for an autopsy. I'd like to dedicate this excerpt of a song to it:

Quote:
Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

Not sure at this stage if my files are retrievable Recently reformatted our old (reliable!) laptop and just loaded Word tonight (to rewrite my very overdue essay ) and it's all different! So it's going to take me a while to work out how to use the program....gggrrr wwwwaaaaaaaaa

Whinge over, I've got work to do....

Latest on my computer saga:

Apparently Apple don't pay for my computer to be shipped to the nearest service centre to be repaired. It's their policy in Australia. I cannot fathom why this would be so and I'm NOT very happy about it at all! I have spoken to 2 or 3 people at Apple about it the conversation I had today was something like this:

Me: "But I can't understand why Apple will not pay the cost of shipping. I mean, really, it's minimal and just shouldn't be a problem."

Him: "Well, if it's minimal we hope that the customer will pay because if Apple had to pay for everyone's computers to be shipped around the country from remote areas, we'd go broke"

Me: trying not to choke from disbelief!!

I sure hope that conversation was recorded for training and coaching purposes!! I asked if there was someone I could speak to about it because I was not very happy with that policy and wanted to talk to the policy makers. He suggested I take it up with Apple in the US so I asked for the contact details. He gave me the contact details of Customer Relations in Sydney.

I'm so upset by this whole situation as the reason we bought the computer was so I could use something reliable, that was adult's only and could store my business and uni stuff on (that would't get viruses...). It's 9mths old and we are most likely NOT going to be converting to Mac after this experience!!

Maybe I'm being unreasonable and need to have my thyroid checked lol

no thats crap I would be pissed off too. I am definately a Mac convert. I wouldn't even know where to begin for support and repairs for a non Mac. My mum has had awful trouble with her PC, tried about 5 different repairers, lost all files each time and the computer came back worse. So she had to buy a new one. Not trying to convert you. Just big picture idea. Things just go crap sometimes and it is not fair. Sorry that this has happened to you.
