Jeni, you need to press F8 while the computer is booting, before you get into windows.
I would NOT recommend editing the registry!

go Alt-Cntr-Del (to open Task Man). Go to file, and "New task (Run)". Type in regedit and hit enter. MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!! First thing you should do is back up your registry.
File -> export. Save it somewhere in case you crash it - at least you will have it backed up!!

I get this with my computer sometimes. I find that if I just restart and let it upload itsself it generally fixes if it doesnt I hit control-alt-delete bring up task manager goto processes fnd explorer.exe right click end process then click file & run type in explorer.exe & sometimes that works. If none of that works I have no idea.

Have you tried boosting from your windows disk and doing a repair?

Jeni, to me it sounds like you windows has been corrupted. It is still possible to pull the files you need, but you may need to get it to somewhere with technicians.
You will most likely have to restore your computer (so wipe it) which is a PITA, but dont do that until you have pulled your: Emails, Everything in my documents Anything else you need that could be elsewhere (unlikely). I feel for you!
