Since I started feeding dd, it has been healthy, with the occasional "treat". She would have "treats" so rarely, that she would really binge on them when she was offered them.

In the past few weeks I have really made an effort to control what she eats and to get really excited when telling her what we are having for dinner, and to let her choose veges at the markets etc... it all paid off when she was hungry yesterday afternoon and asked for broccoli!!

I too am wanting to watch "honey we're killing the kids" tonight. I hope it educates some more people about foods so junk food isnt the norm.

I think what works often varies from child to child and family to family, too.
When I was a kid, if we received chocolate or lollies (e.g. for Easter, the Royal Show) we would put it away in a big container and after lunch on weekends we could have a little bit. As we got older we were allowed to do what we liked with it, but we all still did that. We were also all very active kids, which while not an excuse to gorge on crap (and in fact, if we had done, we probably wouldn't have felt like being active), it did mean that having a sweet biscuit for afternoon tea, or a roll-up with a school lunch, wasn't really risking our health (IMO).
Right now what my DD demands most is bananas, which cost MORE than convenience/junk foods - but I buy them anyway.

i'm not trying to get on the no junk ever and i cook muffins with cho's and things in them for snacks , my point was there was so much in the one box.
thought you would all like to know that last year we spent $3000 on ds (4) teeth he has weak enamel and was eating too much dried fruit.
yes the sugar was too concentrated and combined with the weak enamel he's back teeth were rotten.
i was making sure he was brushing his teeth and helped him in the morning but didn't help.
he was having sultana bran at daycare for breakfast but brushing hais teeth before we took him not after eating.
dentist said i was doing the right thing for his health and to learn healthy eating but as far as teeth go the best treats are choc, custard and ice cream as they don't stickto their teeth.
now he does his teeth in the morning so he knows how but we do the important before bed time with paste followed mouthwash and floss every other day.
after food he knows to have a drink and how to rinse away with water. if i pack drioed fruit the toothbrush goes to.
