Towel giant cuts 140 jobs

Thursday, 13 July 2006. 10:33 (AWST)
Australia's main towel company, Canning Vale Australia, is shifting its manufacturing jobs overseas and will shed a third of its workforce in the process.
About 140 workers at the Canning Vale weaving mills in south-eastern Perth were told this morning they were being made redundant.
The company says it can no longer compete with cheap labour costs overseas.
Founder Frank Prainito says it is also impractical to keep manufacturing towels in Australia for environmental reasons, as his factories are using 1 million litres of water a day.
He says the company will now import towels from China and Thailand.
Mr Prainito says he will help the sacked workers find jobs and pay them their full entitlements.
"Depending on the amount of service that entitlement increases, on top of that of course they get all their normal long service leave, holiday leave, all the accruals that they're entitled to," he said.
It has been making Canning Vale towels in Perth for nearly 30 years.

oooo that's a bit sad...the end of an era. For some vague reason, I once thought that towels by Canningvale were made by prisoners....

What a shame that Aussie have to lose jobs but I find what he said about the water issue interesting as in Perth (Australia even!), that amount of water is a bl**dy lot! Would be great to see the real research regarding this to make sure it isn't a 'only justified to the public' sort-of thing and the area of Asia they will be making them now isn't as short on water as us IYKWIM.
