So front loaders are winning

OK so this may seem like a stupid question but I have never owned anything other than a twin tub

With both front and top loaders.....do you get any problems with clothes wrapping/knotting around each other?? I hate trying to untangle my clothes, but that might just be a twin tub thing as I have to pull clothes straight out of the water/washing tub to chuck them into the spinner........

The only thing I do love about my twin tub though is it only takes a max of 20 minutes to do a complete load, washed and spun LOL

Just remember to turn the spin speed down in your front loader as that is what can cause elastic to go and makes for crunchy nappies. I have mine on a max of 1000rpm (goes up to 1400rpm)

I spin my nappies on 600rpm Tracee (mine only goes up to 1200rpm).

Mel - the clothes don't get tangled at all in a FL

I have a top loader (no agitator) and things occasionally get tangled, but NOTHING like in a twin tub. I lived with one of those for 3 years (in a furnished flat I rented) and HATE HATE HATE them. The one I had was so awful... I think I kicked it every time I used it. It was old and crappy and so loud I felt bad for my neighbour every time I did laundry.

Anyway, whatever you get, it will seem like a dream after a twin tub!

Hmm ok so I'm also leaning towards the FL now i think.
So questions to ask is -
  • spin speeds
  • cycle length options
? Anything else?

And you are not crashing, Mel, you are helping me

mel i had a twin tub before getting a front loader. they are quick huh?! & very water efficient.

but .... once i used front loaders (travelling in europe) i swore i would get myself one. and i did, as soon as we got home!

def no tangling. much gentler on the clothes. love our FL. it doesn't quite have all the features the salesman said it did (grrrr), but .. i had 2 kids in the shop and wanted to get outta there fast!

Qs to ask:
* what temp is 'cold'. even tho it says 'cold', some have a minimum temp setting of 30 or 40 degrees so will heat up the water. which i find annoying!
* any child lock features? benji loves ot reset my washing cycle
* if you have a solar hot water system. you may want to consider a machine that has 2 water pipes so the hot water comes from your system and not heated up eletrically by the machine.
* are you the super organised type of mama who would use a timer? (i have it on my machine but never use it. i like to be around to recycle the greywater)

if i had my time again i would focus on the top 3 points and forget about the bells and whistles. i don't care about preset anything and the zillions of diff temps. i'm happy with a cold wash most of the time and then a warm wash for the special occasions!

oh and check what's important to you in the manual (which is inside the machines in the store). my salesman said the machine had everything i was looking for. it did not.

I have had an agitator less top loader and now a front loader and I would still choose a front loader if only that the top loader used about 175 litres and the front loader uses 68 litres!!!!
