one party I went to on Philip island an ambulance was called for a girl who had eaten too many 'special' cookies... it was really far from a hospital. in the end she was ok and the ambos didn't take her, not sure what she got charged for the call out fee. thank goodness she didn't need to go to hospital!

Ouch. We pay 26.773 cents per day for ambulance cover as part of our energy bill (says the girl who just got hers in the mail!).

whilst on AUSTUDY in 1996, i couldn't afford the THEN $32 per year for an adult ambo m'ship on my $128 a week. the week after i was dithering about this, i collapsed and my friend called 000. Ten minute ride - seven months later, after coming out of a coma and learning to talk.walk again etc - got presented with a $600 bill for that ride.

now i will NOT go without ambo cover.

very well worth having

esp for people living outside metropolitian areas.

in november 06, after 30 hours of labouring at home, i again needed the ambulance to get to nearest hospital when labour was going pretty bad, so again, very glad we had the ambo cover. It was reassuring to have the ambos turn up so fast when we didn't know what to do and i couldn't move.

ouch!

Our private health insurance covers ambulance cost. I used the ambo about 8 months ago and it cost us nothing, phew!

Another important thing we have learned living so close to the border

Check with whoever you have ambulance cover with to insure you have cover in other states

A few people we know here have had to call an ambulance in Qld (we live in NSW) and they weren't covered

We joined the ambulance after a close call - DH had an accident on the beach a long way from the hospital. The ambulance wasn't called - the Parks ranger took DH to hospital in their 4WD - but due to that the Parks people changed their policy and they will definitely call the ambulance next time... it would have cost us a LOT if the ambulance had come (could have needed an chopper to come in and lift him off the beach - $$$$)
~ $130 for a family annually in Victoria - for good peace of mind! Especially with babies and kids around - you never know when you'll need an ambulance...

OUCH... thats one big bill....

We have HCF ambulance cover (family) and this year it will cost us about $61- (price has just gone up by about $6 a year), I am in NSW.

It is well worth it I think for peace of mind. We originally got it when pregnant with #2 because we were having a few issues with the pregnancy.

Hey, one of my specialities, the Health Insurance Levy Act! NSW & ACT both levy a tax on health funds to fund ambulance services for members of health funds. Qld has the electricity account funding, and I think Tas has some sort of government funding/tax/levy thing going as well.
