Default Alternatives to lanolin?

Can anyone please advise any alternatives to lanolin when lanolising wooly soakers? I have made some night nappies for a former colleague but both her and her son are allergic to lanolin.

TIA

Would they then be allergic to the wool soakers though since lanolin naturally occurs in wool?

grumble of the day: Living in a street that only gets dial up or over the top ridiculously exxy wireless. And dh is supposed to be running his web development biz from home now too. So he's on forced holidays. You'd think we're in woop woop, but no. dh was getting top ADSL just 400m up the road at his old office. Long grr, should've made it a post.

How about fabric softener, like you would use with fleece covers?

I wouldn't be using fabric softeners on anything where a person has been found to be allergic to something. Fabric softeners contain perfumes [amongst other things] and can make these allergies much worse... be it a skin-related or breathing-related kind of allergy.

I have spent a couple of hours thinking about this ... and apart from "trying" acrylic soakers [thanks JohT] ... then the only thing I can think of that MIGHT work would be a bees-wax product ... similar to those used on ski-wear; mittens, gloves etc. I would not recommend any scotch-guard type products as many of these are petro-chemical based and would make Bub's skin worse.

Being that lanolin is a fat-based product ... then the alternative might be to use a wax-based product. It would require experimenting as I have not come across your problem with a customer being allergic to the lanolin.

I did consider suggesting using glycerin ... but this is more used to soften certain animal fibres rather than waterproof them.

As an aside ... with my acrylic soakers ... we found through the testing process that fabric softeners "created" a major wicking problem and also caused the item to "stink to high heaven" when the yarn became damp from contact with urine.

What about not lanolising them? I've heard some people use soakers this way with success...

Thanks for the responses.

The baby in question is actually about 3 - I made him a couple of night nappies because he is still wearing a nappy to bed thus proving it's never too late to convert to cloth

yes us too.
but unless its very processed wool, surely some lanolin remains naturally???
in the past i have read how organic wool (and lanolin) is tolerated - its the processed wool that has more...allergens??

What about just using fleece covers or covers made from wool interlock? I like the acrylic pants idea too. They also have the huge benefit of being machine washable
