Ok so I've been on the RPAH (failsafe)elimination diet for 8 or 9 days now? and I've also made it dairy, soy, wheat free and things have slightly improved I guess but nothing out of this world.
Scott is still very unsettled mostly but I guess the screaming has come down a notch or two iykwim. Only problem is a lot of the allowable vegetables like brussel sprouts and cabbage I've discovered don't agree with me as for two days I've had stomach cramps and diarrhoea and nausea and bloating since I made the soup recipe I found on the failsafe booklet. It's the chicken one with rice noodle. Prior to that I was eating boiled rice, poached or baked chicken breast with a small amount of potato and beans, squash, pears and parsley I think was all. I was also taking a additive free multivitamin and having ricemilk, the soup recipe was my first go at making something that resembled a meal. I spoke to the paed yesterday and Scotty hasn't been gaining much weight and he wants to start neocate which is fine in as much as the boy needs to put on weight but from what I've read they can react to neocate as well and I'm still non the wiser to what he actually reacts too. I just have not had enough of a success wiith the diet to start challenging and now he isn't really gaining on just breastmilk I'm in a quandry as to what to do. I read somewhere that with infants you should see a result with elimination in a week so was expecting h3e would be more settled by now??? Do I rest his gut whilst expressing and then go back to feeding and start challenging straight away? Do I get testing done? Any ideas/opinions would be appreciated.

hmmm I would say no way to thinking about challenging until he is completely settled and that doesn't sound like its the case at all
until he is at baseline you will never know for sure what is going on - there will be too many things clouding the situation.Cabbage etc may be low chem, but it can still cause gas in a lot of individuals, so maybe you need to try avoiding it too - go back to the plain rice, chicken, potato & beans. I'd probably steer clear of the squash too actually. I know one mum who breastfed for a bit (untily her DD went on neocate) and all she could eat was boiled rice and chicken without invoking a reaction - hence her decision to go Neocate as MUM was having major issues with that diet and her own well being. The thing I know some mums forget when b/fing on an elim diet is that their OWN well being has to be considered too... The kids that react to Neocate often tolerate Elecare and vice versa.... elecare has a very slight connection to corn though so we never used it for more than 1 bottle I think corn is Emma's biggest baddie! My suggestion would be to stick to the super bland foods for a bit longer (at least 2 weeks I would have thought initially), and supplement with the neocate if you have to (the number of kids that do react to neocate is far less than the number that tolerate it). Can you cope with just eating rice and chicken and beans though? How are you doing at the moment?

That was my problem Theresa, initially it was just the rice chicken and beans, even for breakfast- ugh. I was starting to feel too light headed thats why I added the no additive multivitamin so i thought I'd better try some of the other allowable vegetables even though I loathed them and well, I wished I hadn't now.
Even if I loved chicken beans and rice I just don't think that that and a multivitamin is a good diet. I just seem to be going around in circles on this one.

it can take a few weeks for withdrawals to pass. even your symptoms may be withdrawals. that's one reason we tend to eat badly initially. some families even eat ice cream for breakky.
if scott is ftt because of wheat/gluten, it can take 8 weeks for it to leave him system and start healing. some people react to rice, perhaps try millet or buckwheat instead?

Oh Trish sounds like it's a hard slog on the elimination diet for you. I know we are day 4 here and I am the one having the terrible withdrawals. So i can only imagine what Scotty is feeling, on top of his previous state.
I love brussels and they don't affect me or my two, but they knock DH around. He can't eat any more than 3 a day or he turns into the gas monster from hell - he's already a fart machine, but he gets WAY worse. I hope you can get a settled household soon |
