I think he is amazing. I knew most of it but had conveniently forgotten when it came to convenience (Lenards DONT use free range). Ive never bought a cage egg but didnt realise that products that had 'dry egg' or 'wet egg' in them were from cage eggs OR that MAYONNAISE has cage eggs! OMG!

I also think it is brilliant that the UK are banning battery farming!

I didn't watch it, was already aware of what goes on

We have our own chooks now so no longer by eggs But when we did by eggs we bought eggs from our local free range farm, thats also where our chooks came from ( i have photos of the chook farm some where will have to have a look )

We only by free range organic chickens

We also get our beef from a localish farm that practices Sustainable farming practices and Low stress animal management.

Since being on the failsafe diet we don't buy prepared foods etc so don't support crappy farming/animal husbandry practices

We have also cut down heaps on our meat eating

somebodys done that show before jamie oliver - on foxtel....they had to catch their own dinner, pluck it themselves, etc...most went away vegetarian.
i wish i didnt have to support the meat industry (or dairy) but i dont feel i should force my children NOT to eat meat or TO eat meat - and dh and the dskids eat meat. i should probably make more effort to make better(more humanecontradiction much??LOL!) meat choices for them, but budgetwise its alot more difficult, same as organic im afraid
its very easy not to think about things like where your food comes from - i do ignore alot of other things im not happy to but it keeps me sane and not depressed lol...the way of the pisces

eta i do think jamie oliver is cool - i love how he educates about nutrition too

I watched it more to see how he was going to do the show rather than to learn things, since I'd done a lot of reading about it when I made the decision to get our own chooks. Though I was surprised the chooks only grow for a month before being big enough to eat.... I'd have thought 3 months. When choosing hens for backyard eggs, I won't use the Isa Brown chooks, because I've heard they have been bred into an unhealthy rate of egg production that can cause them health problems.

The "wet egg" thing is horrifying.... not that they use broken eggs - but that people would cook with something that looked like that.... EWWWWW! I guess that's what they use in store bought biscuits and things.

The reason they don't grow up the roosters into food is because egg laying chickens aren't the same as the meat ones, and people who farm egg producing chickens don't normally also supply meat chickens... I guess it's cheaper/easier for them to dispatch the male chicks and not have to feed them into maturity than to just let them live and become roast dinner. Its a shame that we don't get the choice to buy rooster meat from egg producing farms. When I bought my chicks the roosters were 50c.....compared to $3.50 of the females.....

I thought the show was great, I like the way the he challenges they way that we eat.
It is very easy to forget where our food comes from. My only regret is that DSD didn't watch it with me, she is a big believer in meat at nearly every meal, but she was avoiding helping fold the washing so went to bed instead. Dh saw the last half of the show and thinks that now I should only buy free range eggs and meat.
I was talking with my grandparents not long ago about how chicken use to be consider a luxury meat, but consumer demand has made this industry grow, we want to have value for money, so in a way we have caused this problem.
I think it was really brave of Jamie to have done this show considering that he was taking on one of his sponsers, but it was a very thought provoking show and very well done.

even free range may not be as nice as it sounds - some of the farmers (I'm told) have the big sheds, but open the doors to the elements with no shade or protection from sun/rain/hawks etc so the chooks have to stay inside anyway organic is much better

if anyone wants humanely treated beef, you could try honestbeef Home . it's not really that expensive per kilo, but you have to buy a certain amount (that's what freezers are for )

I thought it was so good and am so glad I watched it. More importantly, am glad DH watched it!
He's never been bothered by it all but was really disgusted at a few things last night so told me he wants to get some chooks for our backyard now

Agree Trippy, blergh - almost vomited when watching the MRM part.
Most shocking part for me was the unnatural growth chooks, 35 day life span!!

I watched the one last week too so after these, I should be 50kgs lighter and completely organic/free range eating within the year.

And G - tell me about it. Jamie's a bit of alright eh?!!

It actually works out cheap Bron because it is a set amount/kilo for all the cuts of meat Instead of paying higher prices/kilo for the "dearer" cuts

Yes, the free range egg thing isn't always as rosy as it sounds... which was the main reason I decided that even though its apparently the same price or cheaper to buy free range eggs than keep chickens yourself... at least you know how they are treated. I've heard that another trick they do is to put the food and water on the opposite side of the barn, to discourage the chooks from venturing out outside (which keeps the outside areas looking plush and green where they would normally be barren from being scratched in.)
