Anyone have VOIP?

I was thinking of joining Adam internet with their current "Go Naked" deal but am unsure about how the VOIP works - I presume because you no longer have a landline and your calls are through the internet that of course you would need to have your computer and internet running full time? I was wondering how those who have it found it (not of course necessarily Adam - but any like this) and how it compares having your computer running full time, any help and advice would be greatly appreciated and I hope that I have that term VOIP right !!!

Do you have cable internet?
That is the only way to have it running without requiring a landline aswell.

In either case, your wireless internet is what makes/recieves calls so you don't need your computer turned on for it to run.

We've had voip for over a year now and the savings are enormous. We are with Engin and on a $15 plan - free local and STD calls, cheap mobile and overseas rates. Our bill has never exceeded $30 (usually closer to $20) and that is after I've called my mum at least twice a month and spoken for about 30mins on her mobile (she doesn't have a landline).

Thanks for that Tracee, I will contact Adam internet and see what they say about having it here etc as we don't have cable internet but I wondered from reading their site what it entailed as they don't mention cable - but then again I could have missed something. Ah that makes sense though about going wireless, dh has wireless for his work. Yeah want to make some savings, sounds like a great idea if we can get it. Thanks again.

I have used VOIP, you don't have to have it connected to the computer full time. not sure how it works, but mine is attached to the modem (cable) and I use my normal cord less phone. my monthly bill is around $15 -$20

We have it and I love it. I'm with Engin too. We went from spending about $140/mth for phone and internet, to $90 (internet is $70).

All you need is a phone line for the broadband to run though. You don't pay for a telstra line though. I have 2 sons that work at Adam. Luke works on the help desk, so you may speak to him if you call My other son James, works on more advanced technical stuff. We don't have voip ourselves though. We have tried it a few times at various stages but haven't been 100% happy with it.

We have ADSL 2 + VOIP
We have to have a home line to get the ADSL - but then it changes your dial tone for VOIP calls (we have it on this permanently) and if we need to make a call through our phone provider we just press a code to ring normally.

It is definately cheaper for mobiles and we get 50 free local/std calls a month with our internet provider~

I spoke to them today (sorry did not catch his name, but he was very helpful), and because we are with Optus it will make it a little more difficult actually to do - lots of disconnecting/reconnecting etc. I have to wonder if it will be worth it really! Oh and why weren't you happy with it?
