Hi all,

I posted a little while ago about my son being poisoned from an ice-pack. Since then I have been lobbying the Federal Government about the safety of all imported products including foods, textiles, toys, medicines etc.

SBS are hosting a debate on their program Insight on the 28th October about this issue. They are looking for guests to come on the show who have been affected by a toxic imported product. If anyone knows any of the kids who got sick from the Bindeez or any other incident involving an imported product making someone sick in any way (child or adult) and they would be willing to get involved can they please contact SBS and ask for Sarah Allely. The bigger the debate the more chance that something will be done to make all goods safer for all of us.

Thanks

My friend's little boy was one of the ones poisoned by Bindeez. I'm seeing her tomorrow so will pass the info on to her.

It really amazes me that this can happen. For the little toys that I make and sell I had them safety tested (which was not a cheap exercise) to comply with the Australian Safety Standards. If I, as a little work at home mum have to do this, why don't the big companies?

Nicola, I saw in the supermarket a few weeks ago that a brand of the icepacks had a safety recall on them and I assumed it was a result of what happened to your little boy. So hopefully your message is getting through.

Yep 22 different ice-pack products have now been recalled but theissue is so much bigger. I have been watching on in horror at what has happened in China knowing that we are not protected and a similar thing could happen here. Recalls are great but they only happen after someone has been made sick. I want to see the government put protections in place so that these products don't even make it on to the shelves. The poison that my son had killed dozens of children in India when children's paracetamol was contaminated with it and there was toothpaste which was found in Australia. I think we deserve better.

I have seen a few recalls too. Good on you for taking a stand and I hope the program goes well for you

Just to let you know that I've heard back from my friend and she will definitely contact them.

She is a very confident, intelligent and well-spoken woman - I'm sure she has plenty to say on the topic.

Excellent.

Much to my family's annoyance, from last year we've had a ban on most toys here (For Tahlia's birthday I'm even asking guests not to bring a gift at all), because I'm not supporting the cheap imported toy industry - with things like the bindees, lead paint, magnets and small pieces falling off - they just care about their customers....so long as they can make their money.

by the way.....I've heard you can make your own icepacks by freezing a well sealing bag with half water and half vodka..... never tried it though.
