Default Alternatives to chemical air fresheners

Hi there, I hope someone can help me. I HATE standard air fresheners with an absolute passion but dh insists on using them in the bathroom. They make me feel ill. Is there something natural that i can get instead?

What about a few drops of essential oil in something instead?
The best thing from removing nasty smells from the toilet is a match. When you light a match, the smells just dissapear, like magic! We have a box of matches in our toilet!

We used to use water soluable lavender in water in a spray bottle. DH also has now reverted to sprays which I hate, you have pushed me to start the lavender again. I guess you could use any oil that is water soluable?

just a couple of drops of ess oil is plenty
in the toilet you can put the drops inside the cardboard bit of the toilet roll holder
or wipe it around the underneath of the lid with a damp cloth

Another one is lemon cut up and doused in hot water - depends on what areas you can put this in terms of safety.

Or sprinkle some cinnamon

or if you have wood, the Tinderbox wood polish is luvvvverly! lol

just be sure and check appropriateness of the oils if pregnant/small children etc

I recommend the above ideas, but also, if you like the smell of eucalyptus, Bosistos makes a eucalyptus spray which works as an air freshener, as well as a cleaning spray. We keep a can in the toilet for quick stink fixes, I also use it if anyone's been sick as a disinfectant. You can just get it at the supermarket.

Thank you so much for all your tips, I just knew that there would be a really obvious alternative that i hadnt thought of. I just remebered that i have some of that eucalyptus spray in the kitchen cupboard for use as a disinfectant when someone in the house is sick I think that i will dig that out to start with. Thanks again

Yup that's what we use! My parents and I can't tolerate the perfumes in air fresheners. And its so much cheaper too.

Coles has an orange and a lemon myrtle natural pump spray air freshener in their smelly stuff isle...

Another option is those reed diffusers - you can get them in $2 shops now, they are a bottle of oil and sticks poking out of it - you can refill them when they are empty too...

The scent in the toilet roll works wonderfully though. Mum used to buy a brand that actually scented the rolls, her toilet always smelled lovely.

My SIL just sent me a catalogue and link to this as she is having a party:

Nature Direct - Home

They have all sorts of natural cleaning products including air fresheners...

I use floral water. Also called hydrosol's. Some are the water that is used from the distillation process of essential oils. Scented water from essential oils. I use it as part of my cleaning with cleaning cloths. So there is a constant scent to the house of lemon myrtle and I have a few spray bottles if I want a freshen up. I have a lavender water and a jasmine water bottle. It's about $11 a litre. But I don't think I use as much. I buy mine from newdirections.com.au or seoc.com.au One has a minimum order I can't remember which, the other is when I just need a few things. I get my cosmetic and shampoo bases from them also and add essential oils so it's easy to reach the minimum order that way. I just make sure I have enough for 6 months then.
