Default Talk to me about fruit

    funny title, isn't it?
ok, let me begin by telling you that I'm normally not a fruit person. I do like certain fruit but mostly they're tropical fruit that you don't normally get here in Aus (or pay lots of $$ and the fruit aren't very good). I come from a country where you can get hundreds of different fruit all year round, melons in jan, mangosteens in feb, durians in march, mangoes in april, the list goes on Seriously, you should see what available there, it's like living in a fruit paradise!

Now that I'm living here I'm stuck with what to eat. I only get to eat apples, bananas, oranges (not a big fan), strawberries, rockmelons, sometimes grapes, and that's it Right now, the only things I eat are bananas and apples (and let's face it, how many more of those you can eat before you get so sick of them ).

I want to eat more variety because I want to set up a good example for my children. I don't know what else to eat....there doesn't seem to have many for me to choose from. Oranges are in season right now but I don't like them. I try to look around more but all I find is apples ....blerch

So tell me what do aussies generally eat all year round?

I live on bananas and apples in winter. I might have 1 or 2 oranges a week too.

Love summer fruits so much more!

Hey Kaz where do you get your fruit from?
I'm thinking of going down into Newie once a fortnight once our car is up to scratch [like in 10 years ] for shopping, and wouldn't mind a nice organic fruito.

Mandarins and pears are good atm, and rockmelons are still cheap (at the right places). Persimmons are supposed to be really yummy - although still a bit exxy, getting cheaper here in WA as more places grow them. Feijoas are in season ... expensive in the shops but there are three trees in my street, lol. My custard apples are starting to ripen.

I like apples but certain varieties are better than others. I like Pink Lady, Lady Williams, Sundowner and Fuji. Royal Gala and Red Delicious, meh. Golden Delicious are nice for something different. Avoid supermarket fruit and buy from good grower's markets or organic are even yummier. There is a HUGE taste difference between a Coles apple and one from a local organic supplier.

i add frozen berries to stuff in winter too!

Absolutely - I avoid buying fruit from the supermarket - my local greengrocer is often cheaper, and while the fruit can sometimes have marks on it that supermarket ones wouldn't, they generally taste nicer.

I'm not a huge fan of apples - but there are apples and apples. I HATE red apples, I LOVE pink lady apples There is such a variety between powdery, sweet, crunchy and tart apples, if you get different varieties, it's almost like getting a different fruit.

Even with oranges, I much prefer the valencia oranges to navels (though they are more expensive). used to hate kiwi fruit, but I love it now (only if they are still firm though). I like bananas, but only if they are *just* ripe

The ripeness and where you get it from plays a huge part in the taste. Also if you're getting bored with the fruit you can easily get near you, try eating it in different ways.

I basically go seasonal, I wont buy out of season fruit. (WEll tell a lie I buy grapes if they are cheap)

So our fruit diet in winter is pears, apples, oranges, mandarins, bananas, strawberries if I find decent ones.

I'm with obsi on apples. Australian apples for the most part are CRAP, floury and just yuk. So I usually buy granny smiths as Iknow they will be crisp, or have just discovered pink ladies, find the key is to get some with a bit of green on the base.

My neighbour has a tree and gives us some. They are yummo. Although Igloo somehow thinks the skin is tasty and chucks a tanty if I try and peel it, he eats the thing whole.
