Totally agree there Bec. We can only do so much to prevent any exposure but it's better than not doing anything IMHO. I cannot honestly say if all these chemicals have had a major impact on my family's lives but I know I "feel" better not using them.

Thanks for all your suggestions!! I'm off to the health food store tomorrow with a list of your suggestions to see what they have in stock.

i'm frustrated because i'm usually so careful about this; i only use jurlique and alchemy products, Lily uses Gaia, we use crystal pr tea tree deodorants, bicarb and vinegar to clean and herbon for the dishes. I hadn't even considered my toothpaste; it does make sense though, SLS is what makes it froth, isn't it? Grrrr!!!

I also find it a lot cheaper using 'other' products especially with cleaning etc so it helps the hip pocket too

I have an SLS free toothpaste. It's from Neways which is some sort of direct marketing company I think. A friend sells it at her wholesale prices so it's pretty cheap.

I think we had/have the same as Kermi - Red Seal and Snappy Jaws - oops, no, it's Wileda (and our school shop stocks it so no special 'outings' required to get it, but I want to get some Snappy Jaws from Biome, just coz Biome shopping is addictive lol!)

but the dentist says the children should have a flouride paste...
and what the heck is a 'nice' alternative/replacement for Sensodyne?

Hey just wanted to add to this that apparently the current advice from school dentist's is to teach your children (after age 5) NOT to rinse and swish their toothpaste out of the mouth, but to just spit the excess out and LEAVE A COATING OF TOOTHPASTE ON THE TOOTH!!!
I almost fell over when NIc (11) dentist told me this the other day. Who on earth would want that stuff hanging about in their mouth ALL DAY!????

Thank you all so much for the info. I was just thinking that I should get some toothpaste for Harry. Will have a look in my local health store today.

Kira's had her teeth cleaned with Weleda paste from about 12 months (once she was eating solids a bit more enthusiastically). I have shocking teeth so would prefer she doesn't end up with teeth like mine . However my shocking teeth mean that I have to use Sensodyne... so echoing the post above, can anyone recommend an alternative to Sensodyne?

Oh and I totally disagree with the dentist that said kids should have flouride toothpaste, Kira has no idea how to rinse and spit, so I'm happy for her to have the Weleda until she's old enough to figure out how to do that.

yuk! I HATE the taste of toothpaste - I rinse for about 5 mins after brushing my teeth, lol

i guess their reasoning is that if brushing with toothpaste is good, surely it is good to have tooothpaste in your mouth for as long as possible?

might have to check out snappy jaws
