I try to wipe at both, but he is so darn difficult to get to stay still long enough for a nappy change that I often forgo the wipe with wees, but try not to go for more than 2 unwiped changes.

Wipe for both unless I don't have a wet wipe for a wee (like when DH uses the last one and does not refill the container). Those times I dry her with something handy.

I *try* to wipe after both but most of the time we have to change so fast I don't get a chance. Figure he has a liner on anyways

Okay, I never wipe if he's just wet. Maybe first change in the morning if he's sopping wet, but not usually. And he's never had nappy rash. Obviously if he was prone to it, we'd be more careful.
Oh, and to clarify, we use a wet washer, not disposable wipes.

We use cloth wipes wet with water and I have gone through a phase of not wiping for every wee but have come back to wiping each time because of rash. I have also taking to drying in the crevices and/or giving nappy free time to dry off, as too much damp on the skin creates the conditions for rashes, in that the skin's natural waterproofing breaks down. I was giving lots more nappy free time (pretty much all his awake time LOL!) over summer and now that it is cold it has been less often - hence more rashes and a rethink!
Ammonia forms through a combo of urine and certain bacteria, and can e the irrirant that causes the nappy rash. Therefore, I hope to avoid future rashes by wiping away both the bacteria and the wee. I am changing him more often at the moment too. Fiona
