In Perth, almost everything seems to be 20 mins away. Not really, but it's an ongoing joke amongst most people I know that that's the case. (Mind you, most ppl I know live fairly centrally.) Will you have a car? The urban sprawl of Perth can get you down without one, if you're not living in an area that's good for public transport.

I live in Inglewood which is very central (north of the river though). I can get to Malaga in (wait for it...) 20 mins easily. Great for public transport with a train line and heaps of buses, taking only 10 mins into Perth CBD (maybe 20 mins during peak hour). A short walk to cafes, shops, etc.

Renting first is a great idea - you'll want to get your bearings and suss out the areas that are right for you.

welcome to the west

lol, if I remember rightly, Ida's suburb SOR has about the same rep as ours SOR
While I love where we live, there's a few streets I within our suburb that I would definately not live in.
yes, we have had encounters with 'crime' - one who was on a spree anyway - in our suburb and the other one across the border that's got a good rep, and the other one, well, he was from SOR. Next door was broken into a while back, so yes it does happen.
Thing is tho, the first one, it was our neighbours who actually helped us 'catch' him, and waited on the path out the front of where he lived, until the Police came.
*shrug* so all in all it sounds like a not so nice place, but we very much like where we are, for lots of reasons.

kristy you had some reallly practical suggestions - bravo lol!

staress what do you like to do with yourself? we love the beach and coffee and trees and we live about 4 mins drive to the beach (i even walk sometimes, but then i figured out why my suburb is called HILton). 5 or 10 mins from freo with groovy markets and the "cappucino" strip. and we are in an old suburb so loads of massive trees, established flora.

have you started checking out realesate.com.au for an idea of rentals?
maybe we could send some local papers over to you?

Well i don't mind my nerighbours too actually, as soon as my neighbour heard my DH shouting, he came running out of his house.

Why, i don't like mine is that, fyi.. the two house in front of mine, my neghbour's house, the house behind me, the house behind my house .. lol basically our surrounding area all have been broken into, including mine.

We are pretty close as neighbours.. i mean after all the crap that we've been through we always watch out for each other. But I do believe a head ups on knowing which area is good or more 'challenging' than others is good to know.

Or otherwise, just get good security grills. My house is grilled all the way now. All i need is a lion to put in my garden & i'm all set.

Where you choose depends on a lot of factors and what appeals to one person may not appeal to others. Add to that there is a bit of a shortage of housing (buying and renting) so your choice may be dictated by what is available.
This is a good website to see what is available http://www.reiwa.com.au/Nav/Nav-Publ...fb9740215f1e3d
Another with rentals

geez girls! You'll scare her off before she gets here LOL!! I seriously doubt the crime rates here are much different to the eastern states (though I don't really know!) Yep, you do get the whole NOR vs. SOR debate (I am south, always have been and love it!) but Laura is right - maybe have a think about your lifestyle and what you want. I love Rockingham where we live as it is so close to beaches and fantastic parks and it really suits our lifestyle - it's a bit too far to Malaga though

Check out the real estate web sites too - great idea!
